Commercialisation of “Madeira” Wine decreased
According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., in the 1st quarter 2019 the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine stood at 659,261 litres, generating first sale receipts of 3.4 million euros. When compared to the corresponding period of 2018, the quantities sold decreased by 21.8% and the sales value went down by 25.9%.
The data show a general decline in all groups of markets. In fact, exports to third countries (-26.3% in volume and -30.3% in value) and to European Union countries (-20.4% in quantity and -22.8% in first sale receipts) decreased year-on-year. The local market also showed a decrease (-22.2% in volume and -20.0% in value). The two more profitable foreign markets – France and USA – followed the trend; in the first case a year-on-year decrease on first sale receipts of 45.4% was registered while in the second case there was a decline of 28.7%. Nevertheless, it should be highlighted that exports to Germany recorded year-on-year increases of 217.6% in volume and 194.6% in first sale receipts. There was also a growth in the exports to Great Britain (+174.5% in volume and +54.3% in value).

Commercialisation of DO “Madeiran”, GI Wine and other alcoholic beverages produced in Madeira increased in 2018 in volume
According to the same source, the commercialisation of spirits produced in Madeira topped 883.4 thousand litres, up by 1.8% over 2017 generating 4.4 million euros in receipts (-0.4% than in 2017).
The sales of DO (Designation of Origin) Madeiran increased in volume by 16.6%, and in value rose by 29.5%. In the case of GI (Geographical Indication), the change rates were +107.4% in volume and +114.9% in sales value.
