Commercialisation of “Madeira” Wine remained in the red
According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine stood at 530 thousand litres, generating first sale receipts of 3.2 million euros. When compared with the corresponding period of 2019, the quantities sold decreased by 21.3% and the sales value by 24.2%.
In the first nine months of 2020, the sales volume decreased by 17.2% and receipts declined by 20.4% year-on-year. Exports to third countries (-13.9% in volume and -15.0% in value) and to European Union countries (-7.3% in quantity and -7.8% in first sale receipts) dropped year-on-year. The local market also showed a decrease (-58.8% in volume and -51.8% in value).
Nevertheless, it should be highlighted that exports to Germany recorded a year-on-year increase of 10.2% in volume and 7.4% in first sale receipts. There was also a growth in the exports to China (+5.9% in volume and +57.0% in value).
Regarding the top two profitable foreign markets – France and USA – the data show in the first case a year-on-year drop on first sale receipts of 6.3% and in the second case a decrease of 21.5%.
