COVID-19 pandemic affected the sales of “Madeira” wine
According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine in 2020 stood at 2.6 million litres, generating first sale receipts of 14.6 million euros. Compared to 2019, the quantities sold and the sales value decreased by 17.0% and by 21.6%, respectively. According to the available time series (1976-2020), it is the lowest value ever of quantities sold, while regarding the salves value the figure for 2020, without taking in account inflation, is a 11-year record low.
The national market decreased by 56.0% in volume and 53.8% in receipts, influenced by the declines in volume (-62.4%) and in value (-55.6%) in sales made in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The shipments to Mainland Portugal registered a decrease in volume (-28.4%) and sales value (-47.2%).
France, the main market, imported more Madeira Wine. In fact, there was a 2.1% growth in volume and 7.5% in value. In contrast, sales to the Dutch market had the largest decrease both in volume (-35.4%) and in value (-23.8%).
Exports to Switzerland also recorded an increase of 21.5% in the quantities sold and 20.5% in first sale receipts, while the sales to the United States - the main market outside the EU - decreased by 30.8% in volume and 41.4% in receipts.
70.0% of the commercialized wine was sold in bottles at the average price of €6.80 per litre (€7.02 in 2019), while the remaining consisted of bulk wine sold at €2.67 per litre (same price as in 2019).

Certification of embroideries, tapestries and other artefacts decreased again in 2020
In 2020, the certification of embroideries, tapestries and other artefacts generated 488.3 thousand euros of first sale receipts, decreasing by 10.4% compared to 2019. In 2020, of the total certified by IVBAM around 78.1% corresponded to sales made in the foreign countries, with the United States and United Kingdom standing at the top of the list of importing countries of this type of goods.
