Commercialisation of “Madeira” Wine decreased by 4.8% in volume and 7.3% in value

According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine stood at 617,011 litres, generating first sale receipts of 3.6 million euros. When compared with the corresponding period of 2020, the quantities sold decreased by 4.8% and sales dropped by 7.3% year-on-year.

Compared to the 1st quarter 2020, exports to EU countries increased by 1.6% in volume and by 9.3% in value, while sales to third countries grew by 17.2% in volume and by 10.6% in first sale receipts. In aggregate, the sales for Mainland Portugal and in the Autonomous Region of Madeira went down by 58.5% in value and by 62.5% in value, thus determining the overall drop.

In the first three months of the year, and compared to the same period of 2020, it should be highlighted the growth in sales for the United States of America (69.5% in volume and 47.0% in value), United Kingdom (48.6% in volume and 45.3% in value) and Germany (44.1% in volume and 50.2% in value).  The sales volume to China also had a pronounced 105.8% increase in volume, but the sales value to this destination dropped by 15.6%. Inversely, there were important sales reductions to the Japan (-48.1% in quantity and -57.3% in value), Denmark (-27.1% in volume and -16.1% in first-sale revenues) and Sweden (-10.2% in quantity and -21.8% in value). Exports to France also went down by 13.7% in volume and by 10.7% in receipts.

Sales in the regional market decreased by 68.4% in volume and by 78.0% in value.

In 2020, the bottling of DO “Madeiran” increased in volume and value but decreased in the case of GI Wine and spirits produced in Madeira

According to the same source, the production and bottling of spirits produced in Madeira in 2020 totalled 616.4 thousand litres, down by 29.4% over 2019, generating 3.1 million euros in receipts (-32.4% compared to 2019). The Madeiran Rum accounted for 67.3% of the total volume and liqueurs for 31.6%.

In 2020, the commercialisation of spirits stood at 634.4 thousand litres (-36.3% than in 2019), representing 3.8 million euros (-35.2%) of first sale receipts. 82.9% of the sales value was made in the Region. Exports for France of “Madeiran Rum” totalled 252.4 thousand euros (8.7% of the total).

The bottling of DO (Designation of Origin) Madeiran wine increased in volume by 18.2%, and by 24.8% in value, standing in 2020 at 93.5 thousand litres and 879.2 thousand euros, respectively. In the case of GI (Geographical Indication) wine, the bottled volume was 16.7 thousand litres (-17.6%), which represented a value of 109.5 thousand litres (-22.7%).

In terms of commercialisation of these wines, the regional market accounted for 71.8% of the first sale receipts and Mainland Portugal for 7.7%. The USA were the main external market (7.3%).
