In the 1st quarter 2016
Commercialisation of “Madeira” Wine decreased in both volume and value
According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., in the 1st quarter 2016 the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine stood at 656,932 litres, generating first sale receipts of 3.8 million euros. When compared to the corresponding period of 2015, the quantities sold decreased by 12.5% and the sales value fell by 3.9%.
These results were determined by the decrease in demand by the external markets, not only from the EU countries (-16.0% in volume and -14.9% in value) but also from third countries (-28.4% in volume and -8.9% in value). Inversely, the local market showed a pronounced increase, above 50% year-on-year in both quantities sold and receipts. France remains as the most important external market, despite the decline in the “Madeira wine” exports to this country in both volume (-29.5%) and first sale receipts (-37.9%).
Commercialisation of GPI Wine and other alcoholic beverages produced in Madeira increased in 2015
According to the same source, the commercialisation of spirits produced in Madeira topped 719 thousand litres, up by 11.9% over 2014 and generated 3.6 million euros in receipts (3.2 million euros in 2014).
The sales of PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) Madeiran Wine decreased; in volume by 23.3% and the sales value by 21.4%. In the case of GPI (Protected Geographical Indication), the change rates were +10.9% in volume and +3.6% in sales value.
