Employment and turnover in the large–sized commercial units located in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased
In 2018, there were 87 retail trade establishments in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (up by 1 from 2017) classified as large-sized commercial units, 66.7% of which dedicated to the non retail sale of food (or without predominance in retail sale of food) and the remaining specialised in the retail sale of food (or with predominance in retail sale of food). Please note that a substantial share of these units (82.0%) belonged to enterprises headquartered in Mainland Portugal.
In 2018, Madeira’s large-sized commercial units employed 2,805 persons - up by 1.2% from 2017 - the majority of which (68.2%) working in food retail. There were more women (69.8%) than men employed in the sector, both in the retail sale of food (70.4%) and in the non retail sale of food segment (68.5%).
This sector generated a turnover of 451.8 million euros in 2018 (up by 5.3% from 2017), 99.6% of which coming from the sale of goods and the rest from services to customers. 69.5% (312.6 million euros) of the total amount of sale of goods (449.8 million euros) derived from food retail, of which 81.8% (255.6 million euros) came from sales of “Food products, beverages and tobacco”.
In 2018, sales deriving from own-brand products reached 165.9 million euros (138.8 million euros in 2017), 59.2% of which coming from the retail sale of food.
Concerning the means of payment used, the debit or credit cards were the most preferred means used in the retail sale of food (53.1%) and in the non retail sale of food (64.3%).
The preliminary results for 2018 of the Integrated Business System Accounts – which refer only to enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira – show that, in the year of 2018, there were 3,581 (up by 0.8% over the previous year) enterprises operating. They generated 1.9 billion euros (7.0% growth over 2017) of turnover and concentrated 12,723 jobs (a 2.1% increase compared to 2017).
