Turnover and employment in rendered services to enterprises increased

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases today the preliminary data for 2020 of the Business Services Survey.

The Services Rendered to Enterprises are comprised of the following eight activities: “Computing”; “Legal”, “Accountability, auditing and consulting”, "Architecture and Engineering”, “Technical testing and analysis”, “Advertising”, “Market studies and opinion polls” and “Employment related activities”.

In 2020, the turnover of Services Rendered to Enterprises generated by enterprises located in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) stood at 366.2 million euros in 2020, rising by 63.8 million from the previous year (+21.1%). This figure, which has been growing successively since 2014, is the highest of the available time series (that begins in 2008).

The information now available indicates that in 2020 the turnover of “Accounting, auditing and consulting activities” totaled 70.2 million Euros in 2020 (-2.6 million Euros compared to 2019), followed by “Architecture and Engineering”, which generated 30.5 million euros (-1.3 million Euros compared to 2019). "Advertising” and “Legal activities” stand as the third and fourth more important activities with a turnover of 29.9 and 13.1 million euros, respectively.  

In the year of reference, the activities connected to Services Rendered to Enterprises employed 7,015 persons, up by 1 013 persons when compared to 2019 (+16.9%). Employment in the activities of Services Rendered to Enterprises has been growing uninterruptedly since 2015, and in fact, as in the case of turnover, this number is also a historic high.

“Accounting, auditing and consulting activities”, "Architecture and Engineering" and “Legal activities” led in terms of employment, with 1,989, 850 and 594 workers, respectively. 

Breaking down employment by sex, the data show that approximately 61.5% are men and 38.5% women. From 2019 to 2020, the share of female employment increased by 5.4 percentage points, to 38.5%.

It should be noted that, with regard to both turnover and employment, IT activities, which concentrates a relevant share in both variables, are excluded from the analysis due to the statistical confidentiality treatment applied by Statistics Portugal.

The turnover by person employed increased 50.4 thousand euros in 2019 to 52.2 thousand euros in 2020 (+3.6%), having reached the highest value of the available time series.

The ratio of personnel costs by person employed decreased by 8.4%, from 16.7 thousand euros in 2019 to 15.3 thousand euros in 2020.
