Main fuels released for consumption increased by 4.8% compared to the previous year

According to data provided by the Customs of Funchal, in 2023, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the main fuels released for consumption (diesel and gasoline) exceeded 159.7 million litres, growing by 4.8% compared to the previous year. The breakdown of the information by main type of fuel shows that 108.0 million litres of diesel were released for consumption in the reference period, up by 0.7% over the previous year. As for gasoline, the demand for unleaded 95 and unleaded 98 went up by +14.8% and +14.6% respectively. The sales of these fuels were 41.3 and 10.3 million litres, by the same order.

Concerning the gas sector, the release for consumption of propane and butane in 2023 was around 11.8 and 3.8 thousand tonnes, respectively. In turn, 11.0 thousand tonnes of natural gas were released for consumption in the reference year.

Narrowing the scope to the 4th quarter of 2023, it is observed that in this period, the main fuels released for consumption (diesel oil and gasoline) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira reached 39.6 million litres, a value higher than the same period last year by 4.1%. In that quarter, the demand for diesel oil was 26.6 million litres (+1.2% compared to the same quarter of 2022). As for gasoline, it is observed that between October and December 2023, the demand for unleaded 95 and unleaded 98 gasoline were 10.3 and 2.6 million litres, respectively, increasing by 10.2% and 12.2%, respectively, compared to the same period of the previous year.

In turn, in the 4th quarter of 2023, the propane and butane gas released for consumption was around 2.3 and 0.9 thousand tonnes, respectively, while in the case of natural gas the volume was 3.1 thousand tonnes.

Average prices in 2023 were lower than in 2022

In 2023, the average maximum prices for retail sales of diesel oil were 1.413 euros, decreasing by 27.5 cents compared to 2022. A similar trend was observed for 95 octane gasoline, whose average price was 1.625 euros, representing a decrease of 16.3 cents between 2022 and 2023.

In the 4th quarter of 2023, the average price of diesel oil was 1.424 euros, lower than the one recorded in the same period (1.660 euros) and the previous quarter (1.449 euros). As for 95 octane gasoline, the average price in the last quarter of 2023 was 1.621 euros, showing a decrease of 4.8 cents compared to the price observed in the corresponding period of the previous year and a decrease of 5.1 cents compared to the previous quarter.
