Main fuels released for consumption grew by 3.9% compared to the previous year
According to data provided by the Customs of Funchal, in 2024, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the main fuels released for consumption (diesel and gasoline) exceeded 165.8 million litres, representing a growth of 3.9% compared to the previous year. Breaking down by fuel type, 109.2 million litres of diesel were released for consumption, an increase of 1.0% compared to 2023. As for gasoline, the volume released for consumption was approximately 45.1 million litres of 95-octane gasoline and 11.6 million litres of 98-octane gasoline, reflecting changes of +9.1% and +12.7%, respectively, compared to the previous year.
In the gas sector, the release for consumption of propane and butane in 2024 amounted to 10.9 and 4.9 thousand tonnes, respectively, representing changes of -7.1% and +28.1% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, natural gas released for consumption reached 30.7 thousand tonnes, a significant increase of +178.2% compared to 2023.
Focusing on the 4th quarter of 2024, the main fuels released for consumption (diesel and gasoline) totalled 41.8 million litres, a 5.6% increase over the same period the previous year. During this quarter, the demand for diesel oil was 27.7 million litres, reflecting a +3.8% growth compared to the 4th quarter of 2023. Regarding gasoline, the demand for unleaded 95-octane and 98-octane gasoline between October and December 2024 stood at 11.1 million litres and 3.1 million litres, respectively, marking increases of 7.6% and 16.0% compared to the same period in the previous year.
Average prices in 2024 were lower than in 2023
In 2024, the average maximum retail price of diesel oil was 1.328 euros, a decrease of 8.5 cents compared to 2023. A similar trend was observed for 95-octane gasoline, which had an average price of 1.588 euros, representing a decrease of 3.7 cents between 2023 and 2024.
In the 4th quarter of 2024, the average price of diesel oil was 1.283 euros, lower than the price recorded in the same period of the previous year (1.424 euros) and the previous quarter (1.310 euros). Regarding 95-octane gasoline, the average price in the last quarter of 2024 was 1.535 euros, a reduction of 8.5 cents compared to the same period the previous year and a 4.5 cent drop compared to the prior quarter.
