In 2025

Electricity generation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 2.2% compared with the previous year

In 2025, electricity generation, estimated on the basis of electricity distribution data provided by Empresa de Eletricidade da Madeira (EEM), increased by 2.2% compared with the previous year.

An analysis of the electricity generation mix in 2025 — with total output amounting to approximately 974.6 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) — shows that, compared with 2024, there was a greater contribution from hydroelectric (+91.0%), photovoltaic (+15.5%) and urban solid waste (+0.8%) sources, to the detriment of thermal (-3.1%) and wind (-16.9%) sources.

The share of total electricity generation from thermal sources declined, falling from 67.1% in 2024 to 63.6% in 2025. Consequently, the share of renewable energy increased from 32.9% to 36.4%, representing the highest percentage since the beginning of the available time series (2009).

It should be noted that natural gas remained a significant source of electricity generation, accounting for 19.0% of total production (16.5% in 2024). Electricity generation from this source increased by 17.6% compared with the corresponding period of the previous year.

Focusing the analysis on the fourth quarter of 2025, electricity distribution amounted to 252.1 GWh, corresponding to a year-on-year increase of 3.0%.
