In 2016
Mining and quarrying industry accounted for 0.07% of the regional Gross Value Added
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases today for the first time a study on the mining and quarrying industry in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, based on three different sources: the Regional Accounts, the Integrated Business Account System and the Annual Survey on Industrial Production.
According to the most recent information from the Regional Accounts, the contribution of the mining and quarrying industry to the Region's Gross Value Added (GVA) in 2016 was only 0.07%, lower than the national value, which was around 0.31%. In the case of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, this share has been decreasing, falling by 0.04 percentage points (p.p.) between 2012 and 2016, a trend similar to that observed in the country, in which the drop stood at 0.12 p.p..
On the other hand, according to the information available from the Integrated Business Account System, the number of enterprises in mining and quarrying industry of the Autonomous Region of Madeira went from 27 in 2008 to only 15 in 2017. In turn, in the same period, the persons employed decreased by 59.4%, from 160 persons in 2008 to 65 persons in 2017.
The drop observed both in the number of enterprises and in the persons employed of the mining and quarrying industry is related to the sharp decline in the construction activity. In fact, the mining and quarrying industry supplies important raw materials not only for building (construction and reconstruction) but also for the construction of roads, thus positioning itself as an activity upstream of construction.
It should be noted that, similarly to what happened in the country, the construction activity in the Autonomous Region of Madeira suffered a strong setback in terms of GVA between 2008-2015, which dropped by 44.5%.
The Annual Survey on Industrial Production shows that 127.2 thousand tonnes of sand were extracted and sold by local enterprises, which generated 981.3 thousand euros of revenue. Basalt extracted in 2017 reached 64.9 thousand tonnes, while in the same year 90.9 thousand tonnes of crushed stone were produced in the Region.
