DREM releases the results of the Community Innovation Survey

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), releases, for the first time, information on entrepreneurial innovation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), based on the Community Innovation Survey (CIS).

This biennial statistical operation, is the result of cooperation between Statistics Portugal (INE) and the Directorate General of Education and Science Statistics (DGEEC), of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES), entity with powers delegated under the scope of the National Statistical System, and it was carried during the 2nd half 2019, in all the country. In the case of the ARM, the operation was coordinated by DREM, that collected information of 467 enterprises headquartered in the Region.

In the 2016-2018 period, about one third of the enterprises headquartered in the ARM with 10 or more persons employed had innovation activities

In the 2016-2018 period, 33.5% of the enterprises headquartered in the ARM with 10 or more persons employed, had some type of innovation activity, leading to expenditures. This percentage was higher than the country’s (32.4%). By NUTS 2 region, Centro (34.7%) and Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (34.3%) had the highest percentages and Algarve (28.5%) and the Autonomous Region of Azores (24.3%) the lowest. ARM ranked third among the seven NUTS 2 regions.

In the 2016-2018, 261% of the enterprises headquartered in the ARM developed product innovation (i.e. a new or improved good or service, that differs significantly of the previous goods and services provided by the enterprise and that was implemented in the market), which compares with 23.0% in the country.

30.6% introduced process innovation (new or improved business process, that differs significantly of the previous processes of the enterprise and that was implemented in the enterprise) and 33.0% introduced innovation of product and/or process. At the national level, these proportions were of 28.0% and 31.4%, respectively.

In the Autonomous Region of Madeira, between 2016 and 2018, 20.7% of the enterprises introduced in the market new or improved goods and 22.1% of the enterprises introduced new or improved services. These proportions were not only higher than the national averages (18.6% and 17.7%, respectively), but also surpassed the proportions of all the other regions of the country.

In 2018, total expenditure on innovation activities amounted to EUR 26.9 million, corresponding  to 1.0% of Portugal’s value (EUR 2,598.6 million). Of that amount 43.4% correspond to other innovation expenditures (EUR 11.7 million), 31.4% to intramural R&D expenditure (EUR 8.4 million) and 25.3% to extramural R&D expenditure  (EUR 6.8 million).

More than half of the EUR 11.7 million (EUR 6.8 million, 58.1%) spent by the ARM enterprises in other innovation expenditures was to cover the acquisition of capital goods. This amount is the same as the aforementioned extramural R&D expenditure (EUR 6.8 million), which represents ¼ of the total investment  carried out by enterprises of the Region.
