In 2020
Aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals registered a 10.3% decrease when compared to 2019
Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for 2020 show that the aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) stood at 1,576.7 million euros, decreasing by 10.3% compared with the previous year, a smaller drop compared to Portugal’s (-11.9%). The cash withdrawals fell by 10.9% and the purchases through ATP went down by 9.9%. The amount spent on payments had a 5.1% decrease.
International cards were used to withdraw 33.1 million Euros (a 44.1% decrease), while the amount of withdrawals using national cards totalled 595.4 million Euros, a 7.9% decline when compared with 2019.
At the country level, national withdrawals decreased by 12.2%, and the international withdrawals decreased by 36.5%. The average decreased in withdrawals was 13.8%.
Concerning purchases through automatic payment terminals, the drop in 2020 was less pronounced in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (-9.9%) than in Portugal (-10.7%). In the Region, the amount of purchases through APT using national cards remained unchanged, while those made using international cards fell by 46.2%.

DREM updates the time series on the Multibanco network operations
Since the year 2020 has come to an end, DREM updated the time series on the Multibanco network operations, the first year of data being, in most cases, 1997. Data on operations, withdrawals, consultations, payments, purchases through APT, number of terminals and ATM machines are now available.
