In the 1^st quarter of 2021

Aggregate of withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals registered a year-on-year decrease of 8.6%

Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the first quarter of 2021 show that the aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) decreased by 8.6% compared with the same period of the previous year, whereas in Portugal there was a 15.3% decrease. The cash withdrawals went down by 7.9%, and the purchases through ATP by 9.0%. The amount spent on payments declined by 7.3%.

Breaking down the data concerning withdrawals, the figures show that in the period of reference, international cards were used to withdraw 6.6 million Euros (44.6% y-o-y decrease), while the amount of withdrawals using national cards totalled 136.8 million Euros, a 4.8% decrease when compared with the same period of 2020.

At the country level, national withdrawals decreased by 13.9% and the international withdrawals dropped by 41.1%. The y-o-y average in withdrawals was -15.3%.

Concerning purchases through automatic payment terminals, the year-on-year drop in Madeira (-9.0%) was less pronounced than in Portugal (-15.3%). In the Region, the purchases through APT using international cards decreased by 54.2% while those made using national cards rose by 2.4%.
