49% of the responding enterprises had people in remote working in the week from 27 April to 1 May 2020

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today the results of the 4th reporting week (27 April to 1 May 2020) of the Fast and Exceptional Enterprise Survey (COVID-IREE), a statistical operation devised by Statistics Portugal and the Bank of Portugal, which aims to identify the effects of the pandemic on business activity.

DREM coordinated the data collection from the enterprises in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The response rate in this 4th week was about 94%, much higher than in the country (62%).

In the week from 27 April to 1 May 2020, 73% of companies were still in production or operation (84% in the country), even partially and 26% were temporarily closed (15% in the country);

The percentage of responding enterprises reporting that the pandemic led to a decrease in turnover remained high (87%). This reduction was higher than 50% in a large proportion of the responding enterprises (51%). For these indicators the percentages in Portugal were of 79% and 39%, respectively.  As factors with much impact on the reduction in turnover, the restrictions in the context of the state of emergency and the absence of orders/clients were most frequently mentioned by enterprises.

68% of the enterprises reported reductions in the persons employed effectively working and 31% reported a reduction of more than 50%.

In a week still characterised by the restrictions resulting from the state of emergency and according to a new question in the survey, it was found that around 49% of the responding enterprises had people in remote working and 14% had more than 50% of the persons employed in that situation, In Portugal these percentages were of 58% and 20%, respectively.
