DREM releases information on Transports statistics for the 1st quarter of 2021 

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today data for the 1st quarter of 2021 regarding the different modes of transport. These figures reflect the control measures implemented in that quarter in order to combat the pandemic, showing pronounced negative changes when compared to the same period last year. Indeed, in 2020, the restrictive measures only came into force in the second half of March.

Land transport - Main indicators show a decrease compared to the first quarter of 2020

According to the data compiled by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), the passenger transport by bus in the reference period stood at 3.8 million passengers. When compared with the first quarter of 2020, there was a reduction in transported passengers of 37.4%. In urban lines, approximately 2.3 million passengers were transported (-41.0%) and in intercity lines, 1.5 million (-30.7%).

Between January and March of 2021 there were approximately 12 thousand tickets sold on cableways in the Region (-92.5% compared to the same period last year), 68.4% of which for adults, 4.5% for children and the remaining 27.1% for other type of users (eg: farmers, residents, students, etc…). Total revenue was €67.8 thousand euros, a decrease of 96.6% compared to the first quarter of 2020. This negative growth is related to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as due to maintenance works in two cableways in Funchal that did not operate in February and March 2021.

According to the information collected by ACAP (Automobile Association of Portugal) in the 1st quarter 2021, 922 new vehicles purchased by Madeira residents were registered. Of this total 82.8% are light passenger cars, 10.5% are light cargo and 5.6% heavy vehicles.

In the first three months of 2021, the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira reported a transfer of 2 300 used vehicles, 84.3% of which were light passenger and 14.1% light cargo vehicles. 32 heavy used vehicles were registered, about 1.4% of total. Compared to the year-ago period, the vehicle sale registries of used cars decreased by 30.0%.

According to data provided by the Regional Directorate of Roads (DRE), total road traffic on both Via Rápida and Vias Expresso from January to March 2021 fell by 16.3% compared to the same period of 2020, with this decline being shared by light traffic (-16.2%) and heavy traffic (-20.2%). January and February recorded declines of 26.5% and 27.9% respectively, however in March there was an increase of 13.8% because in the second fortnight of March 2020 there were very severe restrictions to the economic activity in order to contain of the COVID-19 pandemic. The average daily road traffic recorded in both Via Litoral and Vias Expressos amounted to 759,061 vehicles in 2021 (it is necessary to take into account that each passage on the counter is counted, so each vehicle is counted, each time it passes through it). 91,086 km were traveled in Via Rápida during the first quarter of 2021.

The data collected by the Regional Command of Madeira of PSP (Public Security Police) show that 605 road accidents were recorded with police intervention in the first quarter of 2021, with the number of victims standing at 206 (down by 34 from 2020). Among these, 190 were classified as slightly injured, 14 as seriously injured and 2 as dead victims.

Acquisition of electric vehicles in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 34.4% in 2020

According to data collected by DREM from ACAP, in 2020, 166 fully electric vehicles were purchased by residents, representing an increase of 30.7% compared to 2019 (127 vehicles). 56 plug-in hybrids were also purchased in 2020.

Air transport - Passenger movement in the Autonomous Region of Madeira airports declined sharply in the 1st quarter 2021

The aircraft traffic in the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 2,097 movements (landings and take-offs) in the 1st quarter 2021, a 58.5% drop compared to the same period of the previous year. The movement of passengers was 117.7 thousand, a 80.8% decrease from the year-ago quarter. Both airports of Porto Santo and Madeira contributed to this drop in passenger movement, with negative year-on-year changes of 81.1% and 71.2%, respectively.

With regard to air cargo, a decrease of 16.8% was recorded in the first three months of the year, which was shared by loaded (-14.9%) and unloaded goods (-19.7%).

Maritime transport – Madeira-Porto Santo Line lost passengers and the movement of goods also decreased

In the field of maritime transport, there was no movement of cruise ships in the port of Funchal in the first quarter 2021.

The passenger movement in the Madeira-Porto Santo sea line decreased by 57.2% year-on-year, standing at 8.8 thousand.

Regarding the movement of goods in Madeira’s ports, the statistics for the 1st quarter of 2021 show a negative trend vis-à-vis the same period of 2020 (-18.4%) determined by the decrease (-20.6%) in the unloaded goods. Loaded goods also dropped by 2.1%.

120 recreational vessels entered in the marinas of the Region in the first quarter of 2021, representing a decrease of 45.7% compared to the first quarter of 2020. These vessels carried 253 crew members and passengers, down by 305 from the same period last year (-54.7%).
