DREM releases transport statistics for the 1st half of 2021

Land transport – Increase in the main indicators compared to the year 2020, but without reaching the figures of 2019

According to the data compiled by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira, the collective transport of passengers by bus, in the 1st half of 2021, stood at 9.0 million users, with an increase of 11.1%, compared with the corresponding period of the previous year. In urban lines, 5.5 million passengers were transported between January and June of 2021, +3.7% compared to the first half of 2020 (-35.8%, compared to the same period of 2019), while in intercity lines, 3.5 million passengers were transported (an increase of 25.4% compared to the same period of the previous year). It should be noted that in the 2nd quarter of 2020 – the one in which the impact of the pandemic was most felt – the number of passengers transported on buses was less than a third of the value of 2019.

In the 1st half of 2021, 75,000 tickets were sold to users of cableways in the Region (-55.6% than in the same period last year and -83.9% compared to the first half of 2019). The drop between 2020 and 2021 is explained by maintenance works on the cableways. Of that number of tickets, 86.6% were for adults, 3.7% for children and the remaining 9.7% for other types of users (e.g. farmers, residents, students, etc...).Total revenues for the first six months of the year were around EUR 631,000, a decrease of 68.0% compared to the 1st semester of 2020 (-88.1% compared to the same period of 2019). It should be noted that in the 2nd quarter of 2021 there was considerable a year-on-year increase in tickets sold and revenues since, in the corresponding quarter of 2020, the values were very small due to the containment measures to control the pandemic. Note that comparing the 2nd quarter of 2021 with the same period of 2019 there was a decrease of 79.8%.

According to the information collected by ACAP - Associação Automóvel de Portugal from the Institute of Registries and Notary, in the 1st half of 2021, a total of 1,923 new vehicles were purchased by residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Between April and June 2021, 1,001 vehicles were counted, which compared to the period from January to March 2021, represented an increase of 79 vehicles.

Moreover, the Registries of the Region recorded the transfer of registration of 5,468 used motor vehicles in the 1st half of 2021, 85.0% of which were passenger cars and 14.0% were cargo vehicles. There were also 53 heavy vehicles registered, about 1.0% of the total. Compared to the 1st half of 2020, the number of registrations of used cars increased by 654, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 13.6%. However, compared to the same period in 2019, there was an 18.1% reduction. In the 2nd quarter of 2021, there was a 107.5% increase compared to the same period last year (-1.4% compared to 2019).

According to data provided by the Regional Directorate of Roads (DRE), the total road traffic on both Via Rápida and Vias Expresso increased by 13.9% in the 1st half of 2021, although compared to the same period in 2019 it shows a drop of 14.6%. The increase between 2020 and 2021 was in both light traffic (+14.0%) and heavy traffic (+11.1%).

Provisional data provided by the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) show that 1,214 traffic accidents were recorded with police intervention, in the 1st half of 2021, with the number of victims being 457 (up by 65 over the 1st half of 2020 and down by 181 over the 1st half of 2019), meaning an increase of 12.9% when compared to the first semester of 2020, but a decrease of 28.4% when compared to the same period of 2019. Of that total number of victims, 418 were counted as lightly injured, 35 as seriously injured and 4 as fatalities.

Air transport - Passenger movement at airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira decreased by 28.7% compared to the first six months of 2020 and by 72.7% when compared to the same period of 2019

In the 1st  half of 2021, the Autonomous Region of Madeira airports recorded a movement of approximately 445,200 passengers, -28.7% over the first six months of 2020 and by -72.7% compared to the same period of 2019. The airport of Madeira had a drop of 31.3% year-on-year (-73.5% compared to the 1st semester of 2019), contrary to Porto Santo airport, where there was a positive change of 54.4% (-54.5% compared to 2019).  In the 2nd quarter of 2021, there was a sharp increase of 2 863.7% in passenger movement in the Autonomous Region of Madeira airports. This significant change is explained due to the fact that from March 2020 there was a sharp reduction in air traffic, with the months of April, May and June recording very few passengers, because of the measures implemented to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Regarding air cargo, there was an increase at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the 1st half of the year in both unloaded goods (+13.8%) as in the loaded ones (+11.1%), but when compared to the 2019 figures, there is a decrease in both unloaded (-17.2%) and loaded (-14.5%) goods.

Maritime transport – Goods movement grew in the 1st half of 2021 compared to the same period of 2020 but decreased when compared to 2019

In the area of maritime transport, in the 1st semester of this year, 3 cruise ships entered the ports of Madeira, 65 fewer than in the same period of last year, with a decrease of 99.9% in passengers in transit on this type of ship. It should be noted that there were no cruise ship movements at the port of Funchal between January and May 2021.

In the 1st half of 2021, the passenger movement in the Madeira – Porto Santo sea line decreased by 2.8% year-on-year (- 61.5% when compared to 2019), to a total of 56.8 thousand. In the 2nd quarter of 2021, the number of passengers in this line grew by 26.8% compared to the same period in 2020, but when compared to the values of 2019 there was a drop of more than half of the passengers (-57.5%).

The movement of goods in the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in the 1st half 2021 stood at 524.3 thousand tonnes meaning a positive change of 4.4% compared to the same period last year and a decrease of 9.8% compared to 2019. The increase in the loading (+10.8%, +0.1% compared to 2019) of goods contributed to the positive change between 2020 and 2021 and in the unloading (+3.5%, -11.2% compared to 2019) of goods. It should be noted that in the 2nd quarter of 2021, the annual increase in the total movement of goods was 34.8% (when compared to 2019 it shows a decrease of 4.2%).

In the 1st half of 2021, 439 recreational vessels entered in the Region’s marinas, representing a 39.8% increase compared to the 1st half of 2020 (-36.2% when compared to 2019). These vessels carried 896 crew members and passengers, +22.6% than in the same period last year (-64.5% compared to 2019). In the second quarter of 2021, the increase was even more pronounced (+271.7%), but compared to 2019 there was a 60.7% drop in crew members and passengers.
