DREM releases transport statistics for the first quarter of 2022

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today data for the 1st quarter of 2022 regarding the different modes of transport.

Land transport – Main indicators increased compared to the first quarter of 2021, although some of them still do not reach the 2020 figures

According to data obtained by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), public transport by bus recorded in the first quarter of 2022 a total of 5.8 million passengers, with urban lines accounting for the transport of around 3.6 million passengers and interurban lines 2.2 million passengers. Compared to the first quarter of 2021, there was a 52.7% increase in the total number of transported passengers: 53.0 % in urban careers and 52.3% in intercity lines.

Between January and March 2022, 163 thousand tickets were sold by the cableways installed in the Region (+1,235.1% than in the same period of 2021; -1.7% compared to the same period in 2020 affected by the pandemic only in the last fortnight of March), 92.5% were for adults, 4.1% for children and the remaining 3.4 % for other types of users (e.g. farmers, residents, students, etc...). In the same period, total revenue was approximately 1.8 million euros, a 2,540.2% growth when compared to the same period in the previous year (-9.0% compared to 2020).  This substantial growth in both the number of tickets sold as well as in revenue was mainly due to the cableways in Funchal having been closed for maintenance works between February and March of 2021.

Moreover, in the first quarter of 2022, the Registers of the Region recorded the transfer of ownership of 3,434 used vehicles, 85.4% of which were passenger cars and 12.7% were cargo vehicles. There were also 64 heavy vehicles registered, about 1.9% of the total. Compared to the year-ago period, the number of registrations increased by 1,134, a 49.3% growth (+4.5% when compared to 2020).

According to the information collected by ACAP - Associação Automóvel de Portugal from the Institute of Registers and Notary, in the first quarter of 2022, a total of 1,034 new vehicles were purchased by residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which represents an increase of 112 vehicles over the same period of 2021 (-425 vehicles than in 2020).

Provisional data provided by the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) show that, in the first quarter of 2022, 712 traffic accidents were recorded with police intervention, representing an increase of 16.9% (a 13.4% growth when compared to 2020) and the number of victims was 262, up by 50 over the same period in 2021 (+22 when compared to 2020). Of that number of victims, 237 were counted as lightly injuries, 23 as serious injuries and 2 as fatalities.

Acquisition of electric vehicles in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 124.1% in 2021

According to data collected by DREM from ACAP, in 2021, 372 fully electric vehicles were purchased by residents, an increase of 124.1% compared to 2020. 392 plug-in hybrids were also purchased in 2021 (+192.5% compared to 2020).

The airports of Madeira and Porto Santo recorded a passenger movement of approximately 625.6 thousand passengers, in the first quarter of 2022, showing a 431.6% increase vis-à-vis the same period in 2021. Compared to 2020, there was a 2.0% increase. Both airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira had a significant increase in passenger movement, with Madeira and Porto Santo recording year-on-year changes of +436.0% and +335.9% respectively. When compared to the same period of 2020, the airport of Madeira grew by 1.3% and the airport of Porto Santo by 25.3%..

Regarding air cargo, in the first quarter of the year, there was an increase of 10.5% (-8.1% compared to 2020), with the airport of Madeira following this trend (+11.4%, -8.0% compared to 2020).  However, the overall of air cargo in Porto Santo airport decreased by 28.3% (-14.3% compared to 2020). Maritime transport – Goods movement in ports on the rise

In the field of maritime transport, in the first quarter of 2022, 95 cruise ships entered the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. In the same period, in the previous year, there was no movement of cruise ships, but when compared to 2020, there were 27 more cruise ships calling the Madeira ports. Despite this positive trend in the number of stopovers, the number of passengers in transit was 94,886, a year-on-year drop of 33.7% when compared to 2020.

In the first quarter of 2022, the Port of Funchal received 94,467 passengers in transit, the vast majority (90.8%) Europeans. The main nationalities were German (52.9% of the total, -41.3% than in 2020), British (32.0% of the total, -17.2% than in 2020) and Austrian (0.9% share, -68.7% than in 2020). In the Madeira-Porto Santo line, the number of passengers in the first quarter of this year increased by 185.5% when compared to the same quarter of 2021, partly explained by the fact that last year this ferry only resumed the connection between the two islands in early March. In 2022, the number of passengers on this maritime line was also higher than the 2020 figures (+22.0%).

Regarding the movement of goods in Madeira’s ports, in the reference quarter, there was growth over the same period in the last two years (+31.7% compared to 2021; +7.4% compared to 2020). Both increases were recorded in the unloading (+34.9% compared to 2021; +7.2% compared to 2020), as well as the loading (+11.4% compared to 2021; +9.0% compared to 2020) of goods.

From January to March 2022, 275 recreational vessels entered the marinas of the Region, representing a 129.2% growth when compared to the same period in 2021 (+24.4% compared to 2020). These vessels had 752 crew members and passengers, +197.2% in the same period last year (+34.8% compared to 2020).
