DREM releases transport statistics for the 1st half of 2022                

Land transport – Main indicators Increased compared to the 1st half of 2021, although some of them do not reach the figures of the same period of 2019

According to data collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), public transport by bus recorded, in the first half of 2022, a total of 12.0 million users, an increase of 33.5% year-on-year. In urban lines, 7.5 million passengers were transported between January and June 2022, +35.5% compared to the first half of 2021 and -13.0% compared to the same period in 2019. In interurban lines, 4.5 million passengers were carried by bus, a growth of 30.1% vis-a-vis the same period last year.

Between January and June 2022, about 469 thousand tickets were sold by the cableways installed in the Region (+525.5% than in the same period of 2021; +0.3% compared to the same period of 2019), 93.2% were for adults, 4.3% for children and the remaining 2.5% for other types of users (e.g., farmers, residents, students, etc...). In the same period, total revenue stood at approximately 5.3 million euros, a 740.9% growth when compared to the same period in the previous year, ( but -0.3% compared to 2019). It should be noted that in the second quarter of 2022 there were considerable year-on-year increases in tickets sold (386.7%) and revenue (524.3%) but compared to the same period in 2019 there was a growth of 23.5% and 26.4%, by the same order.

Moreover, in the first half of 2022, the Registers of the Region recorded the transfer of ownership of 6,976 used vehicles, 86.1% of which were passenger cars and 12.5% were cargo vehicles. There were also 97 heavy vehicles, about 1.4% of the total. Compared to the year-ago period, the number of registrations increased by 1,508, which translates to a year-on-year increase of 27.6%. When compared to the same period of 2019, an increase of 4.5% was recorded. In the second quarter of 2022, compared to the same period of the previous year, there was a 11.8% growth (+10.3% compared to 2019).

According to the information collected by ACAP - Associação Automóvel de Portugal - from the Institute of Registers and Notary, in the first half of 2022, a total of 2,438 new vehicles were purchased by residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, meaning a +26.8% year-on-year increase. Between April and June 2022, the purchase of 1,404 vehicles was recorded, which compared to the period from January to March 2021, represented a growth of 403 vehicles.

Provisional data provided by the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) show that, in the first half of 2022, 1,471 road accidents were recorded with police intervention, representing an increase of 19.9% when compared to 2021 (a 4.2% decrease when compared to 2019) and the number of victims was 496 (+31 than in 2021 and -142 than in 2019). Of that total of casualties, 451 were counted as lightly injuries, 41 as serious injuries and 4 as fatalities.

Air transport - Passenger movement at the Autonomous Region of Madeira airports grew strongly in year-on-year terms, surpassing the 2019 figures

The airports of Madeira and Porto Santo recorded a movement of approximately 1.8 million passengers, in the first half of 2022, showing a 298.4% increase vis-à-vis the same period in 2021. Compared to 2019 there was an 8.8% increase. Both airports had a positive change in passengers’ movement towards 2021, with Madeira recording a 307.4% increase (+8.1% compared to 2019) and the airport of Porto Santo an increase of 172.9% (+24.2% compared to 2019). In the second quarter of 2022, there was also a rise in both Airports of 250.6% (+27.7% compared to 2019) in passenger movements at all airports in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Regarding air cargo, in the first half of the year, there was an increase of 19.2% in unloaded goods (-1.3% when compared to 2019) and a decrease of 1.5% in loaded goods (-15.8% when compared to 2019).

Maritime transport - Movement of goods in ports on the rise

Regarding maritime transport, in the first quarter of 2022, there were 175 cruise ships entering the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. In the same period, in the previous year, there were 3 movements of cruise ships in June. When compared to the pre-pandemic year (2019) the number of stopovers in the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira went up by 24. Despite this positive trend in the number of stopovers, the number of passengers in transit (160,665) dropped by 48.9% over the same period of 2019.

In the 1st half of 2022, the Port of Funchal received 158,810 passengers in transit, the large majority (89.5%) Europeans. The main nationalities were German (47.4% of the total; -49.8% over the same period of 2019), British (33.6% of the total; -27.8%), Italian (2.0% of the total; -69.4%), French (1.2% of the total; -73.2%) and Austrian (1.0%; -70.3%). It should also be noted that the number of North American transit passengers of the Port of Funchal, in that year, was 10,287 (6.5% of the total; -45.1%) and Brazilian passengers were 3,988 (2.5% of the total; -46.8%).

On the Madeira-Porto Santo line, the number of passengers in the first half of this year increased by 105.6% compared to the same period of the previous year (-20.8% when compared to 2019), settling at 116.8 thousand. The number of passengers counted on that line in the 2nd quarter of 2022 grew by 90.9% compared to the same period in 2021, but when compared to 2019 figures it decreased by 18.9%.

The movement of goods in the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in the semester in reference, was 653,663 tonnes, showing a positive change of 24.7% compared to the same period last year and an increase of 12.4% compared to 2019. The positive change between 2021 and 2022 contributed to the increase observed in the loading (+13.1%; +13.2% compared to 2019) and in the unloading (+26.4%; +12.3%) of goods. It should be noted that in the second quarter of 2022, the year-on-year increase in the total movement of goods was 19.0% (compared to 2019 there was an increase of 14.0%).

From January to June 2022, 891 recreational vessels entered the marinas of the Region, representing a 103.0% growth when compared to the same period in 2021 (+29.5% compared to 2019). These vessels counted 1,974 crew members and passengers, +120.3% than in the same period last year (-21.8% compared to 2019). In the second quarter of 2022, the increase was even less sharp (+90.0%), however, when compared to 2019 there was a drop in the number of crew and passengers by 25.4%.
