DREM publishes the results of the Quarterly Survey on Car Rental Enterprises in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the first nine months of 2025
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) makes available information on self-drive vehicle rental services in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), based on provisional results compiled within the framework of the Quarterly Survey on Car Rental Enterprises in the ARM (ITEAVRAM), referring to the period from January to September 2025. It should be noted that the data for the 1st quarter of 2025 were subject to revision.
More than 342 thousand contracts were signed in the first three quarters of 2025, with revenue exceeding 87.1 million euros
In the first nine months of 2025, 342 937 self-drive vehicle rental contracts were concluded, the majority with vehicle delivery at the airport (58.4% of the total), followed by rental enterprise offices (32.9%) and hotels (8.7%).
The number of contracts increased gradually throughout the reference period. In the 1st quarter of 2025, 102 876 contracts were recorded, rising to 117 606 in the 2nd quarter of 2025 (+14.3%) and reaching 122 455 in the 3rd quarter of 2025 (+4.1% compared to the previous quarter). This trend accompanies the pattern of tourist activity during this period.
From January to September 2025, the average duration of self-drive vehicle rentals stood at 6.2 days. In this category, the average increased progressively throughout the year, rising from 5.8 days in the 1st quarter to 6.1 days in the 2nd quarter of 2025 and 6.5 days in the 3rd quarter.
In the first nine months of 2025, the rental vehicle fleet showed a growth trajectory. After recording 10 789 vehicles in the 1st quarter, it increased to 13 008 in the 2nd quarter (+20.6%), stabilising in the 3rd quarter at 13 255 vehicles, corresponding to a slight increase of 1.9% compared to the previous quarter.
Between January and September 2025, self-drive vehicle rental services in the ARM recorded 339 477 clients, showing a positive trend throughout the year. In the 1st quarter, 97 440 clients were recorded, increasing to 117 901 in the 2nd quarter (+21.0%) and reaching 124 136 in the 3rd quarter (+5.3% compared to the previous quarter).
In the cumulative total for the first nine months of 2025, Portugal (19.7%) and Germany (19.1%) stood out as the main client markets for vehicle rental services in the ARM, followed by France (10.4%) and Poland (9.6%).
Up to September 2025, revenues from self-drive vehicle rental services in the ARM totalled 87.1 million euros. These grew progressively throughout the year, with 17.0 million, 30.5 million and 39.6 million euros in the 1st quarter, 2nd quarter and 3rd quarter, respectively. The base rental service accounted for 80.1% of total revenue, totalling 69.8 million euros in the reference period.
