DREM releases results of the Quarterly Survey on Car Rental Enterprises in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for 2025
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) provides information concerning self-drive vehicle rental services in the Autonomous Region of Madeira based on provisional results compiled within the framework of the Quarterly Survey on Car Rental Enterprises in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ITEAVRAM), covering the period from January to December 2025. It should be noted that the data for the first three quarters of the year have been revised.
More than 431 thousand contracts concluded in 2025, with revenue exceeding 108 million euros
In 2025, a total of 431 492 vehicle rental contracts were concluded, the majority involving vehicle delivery at the airport (58.9% of the total), followed by rental enterprise offices (32.3%) and hotels (8.8%).
Throughout the year, the number of contracts ranged between 88 325 (4th quarter) and 122 568 (3rd quarter), with the 1st and 2nd quarters recording intermediate levels (102 876 and 117 723, respectively). In terms of developments, increases were observed in the 2nd and 3rd quarters (+14.4% and +4.1%, respectively), followed by a sharp decrease of 27.9% in the 4th quarter.
The rental vehicle fleet totalled 10 789 vehicles in the 1st quarter of 2025, increasing to 13 023 in the 2nd quarter (+20.7% compared to the previous quarter) and to 13 271 in the 3rd quarter (+1.9%). In the 4th quarter, the fleet stood at 12 001 vehicles, representing a decrease of 9.6% compared to the preceding quarter.
Between January and December 2025, vehicle rental services in the ARM recorded 424 427 customers, showing a positive quarterly trend in the first three quarters of the year. In the 1st quarter, 97 440 customers were recorded, increasing to 118 018 in the 2nd quarter (+21.1%) and to 124 249 in the 3rd quarter (+5.3% compared to the previous quarter). In the 4th quarter, a reduction to 84 720 customers was observed, corresponding to a decrease of 31.8% compared to the previous quarter.
In cumulative terms for 2025, Portugal (20.1%) and Germany (19.5%) were the main markets of origin of customers for vehicle rental services in the ARM, followed by France (9.9%) and Poland (9.4%).
In 2025, revenue from vehicle rental services in the ARM totalled approximately 108.9 million euros, corresponding to 17.0 million euros in the 1st quarter, 30.5 million euros in the 2nd quarter, 39.7 million euros in the 3rd quarter and 21.7 million euros in the 4th quarter. The base rental service accounted for 79.0% of total revenue, amounting to 86.0 million euros
