DREM releases results of the Quarterly Survey on Car Rental Enterprises in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the 2nd quarter of 2026
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) presents the provisional results for self-drive vehicle rental services in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), compiled under the Quarterly Survey on Car Rental Enterprises in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ITEAVRAM), for the 2nd quarter of 2026.
In the 2nd quarter of 2026, vehicle rental contracts and revenue grew by 2.6% and 7.1% year-on-year, respectively
In the 2nd quarter of 2026, 124 750 self-drive vehicle rental contracts were concluded in the ARM, up by 2.6% over the same period of 2025. The airport remained the main vehicle pick-up location, accounting for 61.6% of contracts (+9.8% year-on-year), followed by rental enterprises’ premises, at 31.0% (-4.8%), and hotels, at 7.5% (-15.9%). From January to June 2026, 213 835 contracts were recorded, corresponding to a decrease of 0.7% compared with the same period of the previous year.
The average rental duration for passenger cars stood at 6.0 days in the quarter under review (-2.5% year-on-year). For motorcycles, the average duration stood at 2.7 days (-21.6%), while for motorhomes this indicator reached 6.9 days (+1.6%).
At the end of the quarter under review, the self-drive vehicle rental fleet stood at 14 025 vehicles, representing year-on-year growth of 5.8%. Passenger cars accounted for 97.6% of the fleet, while motorcycles and motorhomes accounted for 2.4% and 0.1%, respectively. By fuel type, gasoline vehicles predominated (77.3% of the total), followed by diesel vehicles (12.7%), hybrids (8.4%) and electric vehicles (1.6%). The year-on-year evolution of hybrid vehicles (+60.1%) and electric vehicles (+17.1%) stood out, recording the most significant growth.
Germany remained the main source market, accounting for 20.9% of total customers (19.0% in the same period of the previous year), followed by Portugal with 19.2% (19.9%), France with 11.7% (11.2%), the United Kingdom with 8.6% (6.8%), Poland with 7.8% (8.2%), the Netherlands with 7.3% (5.5%) and Spain with 5.5% (5.3%). These seven markets accounted for 81.1% of customers in the quarter under review (75.9% in the 2nd quarter of 2025). Over the first six months of 2026, their combined share reached 79.8% of total customers (77.3% in the 1st half of 2025).
Revenue from vehicle rental services amounted to 33.2 million euros in the 2nd quarter of 2026, up by 7.1% over the same period of the previous year. The base rental service accounted for 80.2% of total revenue, totalling 26.6 million euros (+7.2% year-on-year), while other revenue reached 6.6 million euros (+6.6%). Over the period from January to June 2026, revenue rose to 50.8 million euros, increasing by 5.8% over the same period of the previous year.
