DREM releases the results of the Quarterly Survey on Car Rental Enterprises in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the first quarter of 2026
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) presents the provisional results for self-drive vehicle rental services in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), based on the Quarterly Survey on Car Rental Enterprises in the ARM (ITEAVRAM), referring to the first quarter of 2026. Data for 2025 were revised and are now final status.
Vehicle fleet and revenue increase despite a reduction in rental contracts
In the first three months of 2026, 87 459 self-drive vehicle rental contracts were concluded, corresponding to a year-on-year change of -6.7%. This decrease partly reflects the cessation of activity of some enterprises in the sector that had reported data in 2025.
In the first quarter of 2026, the rental vehicle fleet totalled 11 384 vehicles, an increase of 5.5% compared with the 10 789 recorded in the same period of the previous year. In terms of composition, passenger cars accounted for 96.6% of the fleet (+6.7% year-on-year), followed by motorcycles (3.3%; -20.7%) and motorhomes (0.1%; +44.4%).
Between January and March 2026, self-drive vehicle rental services in the ARM recorded 87 220 customers, corresponding to a year-on-year change of -5.1%. Germany (22.4% of the total; -0.1 pp year-on-year) and Portugal (20.3%; -8.0%) remained the main source markets, followed by Poland (10.5%; -16.2%), the United Kingdom (7.5%; -5.5%) and France (6.9%; -25.0%). Spain and the Netherlands were the only markets to record positive changes (+29.1% and +1.8%, respectively), although with relatively small shares of total customers (5.2% in both cases).
Revenue from self-drive vehicle rental services in the ARM amounted to approximately 17.3 million euros in the first quarter of 2026, an increase of 1.5% compared with the same period in 2025.
