In April 2017

Overnight stays increased by 4.4% year-on-year, with a significant contribution of the Portuguese market (+9.3%)

Initial estimates for April 2017 show increases in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+4.4%), total revenue (+12.9%) and lodging revenue (+14.3%).

At the country level, the rates of change stood at 23.2% in nights spent, 29.1% in total revenue and 32.3% in revenue from accommodation.

In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira topped 638,3 thousand. The total revenue and the revenue from accommodation stood at 35.9 and 23.9 million euros, respectively.

Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists  were +9.3% and +3.9%, respectively. The result in the national market was probably influenced by the calendar effect associated to the Easter period, which in 2016 occurred in March while in 2017 it was celebrated in April. The German (+5.8%) and British (+4.2%) markets had a positive performance, while the French market dropped by 9.5%.

In the first four months of 2017, the overnight stays increased by 4.2% when compared to the same period of 2016, while the growth in total revenue (+9.6%) and lodging revenue (+10.4%) was more pronounced.

The net bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 74.0%, 1.9 percentage points higher than a year before and the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.

The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +13.2%, increasing to € 57.99.
