DREM releases the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2016 and updates the respective Time Series (1976-2016)

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, on its official statistics website, the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2016 and at the same time updates the Time Series (1976-2016) for this statistical area. The tables with data for 2016 were also updated.

The annual publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:

Accommodation establishments (total)

- In 2016, the number of overnight stays, considering all types of establishment, stood at 8.0 million, up by 12.7% over 2015. The residents in Portugal generated a total of 916.2 thousand overnight stays (+20.2%), while non-residents accounted for 7.1 million (+11.8%).

Hotel establishments

- In hotel establishments, there were increases in overnight stays (+10.7%), total revenue (+16.7%) and lodging revenue (+17.7%).

- The main markets were the UK (26.4% of the total bednights), Germany (24.6%) and Portugal (11.0%). The British market rose by 15.6% and the German market by 12.2%. The UK  maintained the status of most important market.

- The annual net bed-occupancy rate stood at 69.2%, up by 4.9 percentage points from 2015.

- The average length of stay decreased from 5.5 to 5.4 nights between 2015 and 2016.

- The revenue per available room (RevPAR) was €47.53 (up by 15.1% from 2015).

Rural tourism

- In rural tourism, the main indicators showed an increase. Bednights grew by 21.9% while total revenue rose by 28.4% and lodging revenue by 25.9%.

Local lodging

 - The indicators of the local accommodation establishments showed a very pronounced growth in 2016, with bednights increasing by 53.3% to a total of 480,161.

Golf

 - The data from the Golf Course Survey show that in 2016, the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 60,476 (+33.5% compared to 2015). This activity generated 2.3 million Euros (+4.7%). 72.5% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Nordic countries, the UK and Germany. 58.5% of the total rounds were sold by hotel establishments and the similar, 23.2% by the tour operators and the remaining 18.3% by golf courses themselves.

Movement of  passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s Ports

 - According to the data provided by the Ports authority, 519,700 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted in 2016, decreasing by 9.9 when compared to the previous year. The number of cruise ships that visited Madeira decrease by 4.8%, with a total of 297.
