Total revenue and overnight stays in Madeira’s hotel industry increased by 7.1% and 3.5%, respectively
Initial estimates for September 2017 show an increase in the tourism indicators, with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+3.5%), total revenue (+7.1%) and lodging revenue (+8.4%).
At the country level, the rates of change stood at 5.1% in nights spent, 16.0% in total revenue and 18.6% in revenue from accommodation.
In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 738.8 thousand. The total revenue and the revenue from accommodation reached 41.2 and 26.2 million euros, respectively. These figures are all-time records for the month of September.
Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by foreign tourists and the Portuguese were +3.3% and +5.1%, respectively, compared to September 2016. The British (+1.6%), French (+1.2%) and German (+0.7%) markets had a positive performance.
In the first nine months of 2017, the overnight stays increased by 2.1% when compared to the same period of 2016, while the growth in total revenue (+8.1%) and lodging revenue (+8.6%) was more pronounced.
The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 78.9%, dropping by 0.1 percentage points from September 2016 but remaining as the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.
The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +5.7%, increasing to € 59.14.
More rounds played in Madeira’s golf courses
The data from the Golf Course Survey show that the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the first nine months of 2017 stood at 47,281 (up by 12.2% compared to the corresponding period of 2016). 73.5% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Nordic countries, Germany and UK. 54.1% of the total rounds were sold by hotel establishments and similar, 26.8% by tour operators, and the remaining 19.1% by the golf courses themselves.
Number of transit passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s ports decreased
According to the data provided by the Port’s authority, 287,440 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted in the January to September 2017 period, a 14.0% decrease when compared to the previous year.
