[NOTE: Since the reference month of January 2018, the preliminary monthly results cover the entire collective tourist accommodation sector, which aggregates hotel establishments (hotels, apartment hotels, tourist apartments, tourist villages, “pousadas” and “Quintas da Madeira”), rural tourism and local lodging. Consequently, the data released this month are different from those presented by INE in its press release, which maintains the old model. It should be highlighted, that in the publication edited by DREM, Table I.6 summarises the main information according to the previous model and for that reason, the values presented in this table coincide with those published monthly by INE. It should also be noted that for the variables establishments, capacity, bed occupancy rate, income and RevPAR, the data excludes local lodging establishments with a capacity of less than 10 beds.]

In March 2018

Overnight stays in tourism accommodation sector increased slightly with a strong contribution of Portuguese market

Initial estimates of tourism accommodation for March 2018 show increases in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+0.9%), total revenue (+8.0%) and lodging revenue (+10.1%).

In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira topped 648.2 thousand. The total revenue and the revenue from accommodation were 34.3 and 22.8 million euros, respectively.

The overnight stays in hotel establishments were responsible for 84.5% of the total (drop by 0.7% y-o-y), while overnight stays in rural tourism (accounting for 1.9% of total) increased by 31.2% compared to the same month of the previous year, partly explained by the reclassification of a hotel establishment in rural tourism. In turn, the local lodging registered a 8.3% increase in overnight stays, representing 13.7% of the total.

Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that, compared to March 2017, the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by foreign tourists and the Portuguese were -1.2% and +21.7%, respectively.

The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 60.6%, drop by 4.8 percentage points over the same month of the previous year.

The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of 4.7%, increasing to € 47.66.

Less rounds played in Madeira’s golf courses

The data from the Golf Course Survey show that the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the first three months of 2018 stood at 21,778 (drop by 2.7% compared to the corresponding period of 2017). 84.4% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Nordic countries, Germany and UK. 63.5% of the total rounds were sold by hotel establishments and similar, 21.1% by tour operators, and the remaining 15.5% by the golf courses themselves.

Number of transit passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s ports increased

According to the data provided by the Port’s authority, 182,663 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted  in the January to March 2018 period, a 31.2% increase when compared to the previous year.
