In June 2018

Total and lodging revenue in Madeira's hotel industry increased slightly year-on-year, despite the 2.2% drop in the number of overnight stays

Initial estimates of tourism accommodation for June 2018 show a decrease in the number of overnight stays (-2.2%). Inversely, total and lodging revenue increased by 0.4% and 1.2%, respectively.

In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 778.4 thousand. Total revenue and revenue from accommodation amounted to 39.9 and 25.3 million euros, respectively.

The overnight stays in hotel establishments dropped by 3.7% year-on-year and were responsible for 85.8% of the total, while the overnight stays in rural tourism increased by 30.7% compared to the same month of the previous year and accounted for 1.8% of the total. That rate of change is partly explained by the reclassification of a hotel establishment in rural tourism. Local lodging, which represented 12.4% of the total, registered a 5.0% increase in overnight stays.

Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by foreign and Portuguese tourists were -2.9% and -2.4%, respectively, compared to June 2017. The German (+0.6%) and French (+0.4%) markets had a positive performance, while the British market decreased by 4.3%.

The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 69.9%, dropping by 4.6 percentage points over the same month of the previous year.

The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of -1.3%, decreasing to € 51.01. In hotel establishments, the RevPAR increased by 0.3% in June 2018, to € 56.04.

Fewer rounds played in Madeira’s golf courses

The data from the Golf Course Survey show that the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the first half of 2018 stood at 36,694 (-1.8% compared to the corresponding period of 2017). 79.3% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from the Nordic countries, Germany and the UK. 60.7% of the total rounds were sold by hotel establishments and similar, 23.0% by tour operators, and the remaining 16.3% by the golf courses themselves.

According to the data provided by the Port’s authority, 272,241 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted in the January to June 2018 period, a 17.0% increase when compared to 1st half of the previous year.
