Flash estimate – In July 2022, for the first time, the Autonomous Region of Madeira records more than 1 million overnight stays
The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of July 2022 shows that 186.9 thousand guest arrivals were registered, generating 1 045.8 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +53.2% and +68.2%, respectively. Compared to July 2019, there were, by the same order, increases of 38.6% and 26.1%.
It is worth noting that this is the first time the number of overnight stays exceeds one million in a month. The Autonomous Region of Madeira, thus, registered in one month, a higher number of overnight stays than in the total of the year 1972.
Comparing the regional data with the country’s local accommodation under 10 beds must be excluded, and according to the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments, there was an increase of 63.6%, a change less sharp than that recorded at the national level (+90,1%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal grew by 28.0% year-on-year, reaching 239.0 thousand and representing 22.9% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 85.5% compared to July 2021, standing at 806.8 thousand. It is worth noting that, compared to July 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +101.9% and the residents abroad were 13.5%. The number of guests resident in Portugal, in July 2022, was estimated at 53.3 thousand and the foreign guests at 133.6 thousand.
In the country, in July 2022, the domestic market contributed with 2.9 million overnight stays (+9,1%) and the external markets totalled 5.7 million (+205.2% compared to July 2021).

According to the flash estimate, the main source markets of non-residents represented 77.1% of overnight stays. In this set, the UK market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 191.8 thousand in the respective month, followed by Germany with 172.1 thousand and France with 71.7 thousand.
In July of 2022, 8.1% of the tourism accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. In the reference month, the hotel sector had 92.6% of the establishments with a guest flow (92,5% in June 2022).
