In turn, in its releases, Statistics Portugal (INE) excludes local accommodation establishments under 10 beds. In this press release and in the tables published by DREM the overall total for guests and overnight stays is higher when compared to INE’s. For the bed and room occupancy rates and for revenue and personnel costs, the figures of DREM and INE are the same since the local accommodation under 10 beds is not included in the compilation of these variables.]

Average daily rate (ADR) reached an all-time high, approaching 100 euros/day

The first estimates for July 2022 show that 91.9% of the establishments had guest flow. Hotel establishments had the highest percentage of establishments with guests (92.6%), followed by local accommodation establishments with 91.9% and Rural tourism with 87.3%.

In the month of reference, the overnight stays in tourist accommodation exceeded 1.0 million in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, representing a sharp increase of 68.2% compared to the same month of the previous year (621.7 thousand overnight stays in July 2021). As mentioned by DREM, it is the first time that the number of overnight stays surpasses the one million mark in a month.

It should be noted that, excluding local accommodation under 10 beds, overnight stays from tourist accommodation increased by 63.6% compared to July 2021, lower than that observed in the country, which was 90.1%. Total revenue and revenue from accommodation increased at a higher proportion than overnight stays (77.1% and 81.1%, respectively) reaching, in the same order, 61.2 and 43.5 million euros. In the country, total revenue and revenue from accommodation registered, in the same order, positive year-on-year changes of 131.9% and 138.8%.

Hotel establishments concentrated 77.1% of overnight stays, growing by 63.9% year-on-year. In turn, local lodging recorded an increase of 88.7%, comprising 20.7% of total overnight stays, while rural tourism only registered 2.2% of overnight stays, corresponding to an increase of 55.0%.

In the main markets, in July 2022, there were quite significant increases when compared to the same period of the previous year. The German market stood out, registering the highest growth of 608.2%, followed by the French market (+47.2%) and the British market, with an increase of 41.0%. In the domestic market overnight stays also increased compared to July 2021 (+28.0%).

Comparing the reference period with July 2019 (pre-pandemic period), the activity in tourist accommodation showed a growth of 26.1% in overnight stays, with the market of residents abroad registering an increase of 13.5%. Considering the main markets, of this segment, there were positive changes in the British (+10.9%) and German (+5.5%) markets, whereas the French market showed a decrease of 18.4%. The domestic market maintained the growth trend, which has been observed in recent months (+101.9% compared to July 2019).

The average stay in tourism accommodation, in July 2022, recorded an increase compared to the same month of the previous year (4.74 nights), standing at 4.98 nights.

The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 71.7%, growing by 14.9 percentage points over the same month of the previous year (56.9%). In turn, the room occupancy rate reached 81.3% (61.8% in July 2021).

In July 2022, the average income per room (RevPAR) was 80.81 euros in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation under10 beds), +48.4% compared to the same month of the previous year. Compared to the values ​​of July 2019, the value of RevPAR grew by 54.4% (52.35 euros in July 2019).

In turn, the revenue per room used (ADR) in tourist accommodation increased from 88.15 euros, in July 2021 to 99.43 euros, in July 2022 (+12.8% year-on-year).
