Flash estimate - In the month of August 2022 the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira exceeded 1.1 million
The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of August 2022 shows that 189.4 thousand guest arrivals were registered, generating 1,116.3 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +26.8% and +28.5%, respectively. Compared to August 2019, there were, by the same order, increases of 30.6% and 21.8%.
The estimates for the month of August 2022 exceeded the previous month's value by 67 thousand overnight stays, the highest value ever recorded in tourist accommodation in the Region
Comparing the regional data with the country’s, it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds, and according to the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments, there was an increase of 24.2%, a lower change than the one verified at the national level (+31.9%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal grew by 5.1% year-on-year, reaching 265.0 thousand and representing 23.7% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 38.1% standing at 851.3 thousand. It is worth noting that, compared to August 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +68.0% and the residents abroad were 12.2%. The number of guests, resident in Portugal, in August 2022, was estimated at 54.1 thousand and the foreign guests at 135.3 thousand.
In the country, in August 2022, the Portuguese market accounted for 3.7 million overnight stays (-11.4%) and the external markets totalled 6.2 million (+86.9% compared to August 2021).

According to the flash estimate, the main source markets of non-residents represented 76.3% of overnight stays. In this set, the UK market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 206.5 thousand in the respective month, followed by Germany with 181.2 thousand and France with 102.6 thousand.
In August of 2022, 8.0% of the tourism accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. In the reference month, the hotel sector had 93.8% of the establishments with a guest flow (same value in July 2022).
