Flash Estimate - In June 2023, the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira witnessed a year-on-year growth of 2.8% in overnight stays
Based on the initial data for the tourist accommodation sector in the Region, June 2023 saw an estimated 191.9 thousand guests, generating 962.2 thousand overnight stays, with year-on-year changes of +10.9% and +2.8% respectively. Compared to June 2019, there were increases of 44.8% in guests and 24.9%, in overnight stays.
During the first six months of the year, total overnight stays reached approximately 5.1 million, showing a growth of 22.4% compared to the same period in the previous year.
For comparability with Statistics Portugal (INE) data, tourist accommodations with fewer than 10 beds need to be excluded. Following this approach, tourist accommodation overnight stays in June 2023 showed a year-on-year decrease of 0.8%, contrary to the country's performance, where there was a rise of 3.7%.
In the Region, overnight stays by residents of Portugal decreased by 10.3% compared to the same month last year, reaching 178.3 thousand (18.5% of the total), while overnight stays by non-residents increased by 6.3%, reaching 783.8 thousand. It should be noted that compared to June 2019, there was a change of +53.0% in overnight stays by residents of Portugal and +19.9% in overnight stays generated by non-residents. In June 2023, there were a total of 49.2 thousand guests from the country and 142.7 thousand guests from abroad.
In Portugal, in June 2023, the domestic market contributed 2.2 million overnight stays (29.2% share), revealing a 6.7% drop. The international markets predominated (accounting for 70.8% of the total overnight stays) and totalled 5.3 million overnight stays, increasing by 8.7% year-on-year.

The first estimated data for the reference month in the Region shows that the main source markets for non-residents accounted for 81.5% of the total overnight stays. Among these, the United Kingdom market recorded the highest number of overnight stays in June 2023, with approximately 185.5 thousand (-6.2% compared to the same month last year), followed by Germany with 181.8 thousand (+2.1%), and France with 78.4 thousand (+18.7%).
In June 2023, 8.5% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not record any guest movement.
