DREM updates the time series on Social Protection with data for 2018
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today on its website, the Time Series on Social Protection, updated with information for 2018. The majority of the tables begins at year 2004.
The 2018 data for the Civil Service Retirement System Scheme is not yet available, so this press release contains information only for Social Security.
1.Social Security
At the end of 2018, there were 65.9 thousand Social Security pensioners in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, corresponding to 25.9%r of the resident population. From that total, 63.1% received old age pensions, 27.7% survival pensions and 9.1% disability pensions. Compared to 2017, the number of pensioners decreased by 3.2%, as a result of the drop in the number of disability and survival pensions (-25.7% and -0.9% respectively). The number of recipients old age pensions increased by 0.2%.
The annual mean value paid to pensioners increased by 1.6% between 2017 and 2018. In this year, the mean paid value in old-age pensions stood at 5 536 euros, above the average value of the disability (4 758 euros) and survival pensions (2 842 euros).
The total value paid reached 325.6 million euros, up by 0.3% over the previous year. Of this total, 10.7% was destined for disability pensions (34.7 million euros), 72.7% for old age pensions (236.9 million euros) and 16.6% to survival pensions (54.0 million euros).
10.8 thousand persons were recipients of the unemployment benefit, down by 10.7% from 2017. 49.8% of the recipients were male and 4.8% were under 25 years old. The 40-49 years age group had the highest share (24.7%).
The average duration of the unemployment benefit was 188 days, up by 1 day from 2017. The average value of this type of benefit was 2 816 euros, a 2.7% increase over the previous year.
The number of recipients of the child allowances increased by 5.1% and the number of recipients of allowances for assistance by a third party decreased by 2.4%.
6.5 thousand persons (of which 48.6% males), benefited from social integration income, up by 5.9% from 2017. 38.5% of the recipients were under 25 years.
The recipients of sickness benefits rose by 10.4% between 2017 and 2018, reaching a total of 11.3 thousand in this year. The mean number of days subsidised stood at 72 days, down by four from the previous year. The total paid values amounted to 14.6 million euros, an increase of 11.1% compared to 2017.

2.Civil Service Retirement System Scheme
At the end of 2018, the number of pensioners of the Civil Service Retirement System Scheme stood at 12.5 thousand (70.6% of which were recipients of disability and old age pensions), the same value as in 2017.
