DREM updates the time series on Social Protection with data for 2019

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today on its website, the Time Series on Social Protection, updated with information for 2019. The majority of the tables begin in the year 2004.

1. Social Security - Number of pensioners increased slightly

At the end of 2019, there were 66.3 thousand Social Security pensioners in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, corresponding to 26.1% of the resident population. From that total, 62.7% received old-age pensions, 27.5% survival pensions and 9.8% disability pensions. Compared to 2018, the number of pensioners increased by 0.7%, as a result of the growth in the number of disability and old-age pensions (7.3% and 0.1% respectively). The number of disability pensions decreased by 0.2%.

The annual mean value paid to pensioners increased by 5.4% between 2018 and 2019, to 4 965 euros. In this year, the mean paid value in old-age pensions stood at 5 749 euros, above the average value of the disability (5 710 euros) and survival pensions (2 945 euros).

The total value paid reached 339.0 million euros, up by 4.1% over the previous year. Of this total, 72.4% was destined for old-age pensions (245.6 million euros), 16.5% to survival pensions (55.8 million euros), and 11.1% to disability pensions (37.7 million euros).

9.7 thousand persons were recipients of the unemployment benefit, down by 10.9% from 2018. 47.5% of the recipients were male and 5.5% were under 25 years old. The 55 years old and over age group had the highest share (23.6%).

The average duration of the unemployment benefit was 189 days, up by 1 day from 2018. The average value of this type of benefit was 2 882 euros, a 2.3% increase over the previous year.

The number of recipients of the child allowances and the number of recipients of allowances for assistance by a third party decreased by 4.7% and 1.4%, respectively.

6.9 thousand persons (of which 48.5% males), benefited from social integration income, up by 6.6% from 2018. 36.3% of the recipients were under 25 years.

The recipients of sickness benefits rose by 9.5% between 2018 and 2019, reaching a total of 12.4 thousand this year, which is a new high of the 2004-2019 series. The mean number of days subsidised stood at 75 days, up by 3 from the previous year. The total paid values amounted to 17.8 million euros, an increase of 21.6% compared to 2018.

In 2019, 11.1 million euros were processed for the 3 303 recipients of the social provision for inclusion, with the age group between 40 and 49 years having the highest number of recipients (879; 26.6%), followed by the groups of 55 years old and over (789; 23.9%) and 30-39 years (705; 21.3%).

2. Civil Service Retirement System Scheme

At the end of 2019, the number of pensioners of the Civil Service Retirement System Scheme stood at 12.8 thousand (70.6% of which were recipients of disability and old age pensions)  increasing by 0.3 thousand from the previous year.
