In the school year 2016/2017
Retention and desistance rate at basic education decreased and success rate at secondary education increased
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases an update of the time series on Education, by including data from the school year 2016/2017. This information is provided by the Education System Observatory of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (OERAM).
Concerning pre-primary education, in the school year 2016/2017 there were 129 institutions (down by 22 from the previous school year). The number of kindergarten teachers in preschool education stood at 737 (743 in 2015/2016), while the number of children enrolled at this level was 5,897 (6,331 in 2015/2016).
The number of students enrolled decreased in all three basic levels of education (-3.1% in the 1st cycle, -3.4% in the 2nd cycle and -3.8% in the 3rd cycle). Public schools had more students (80.1%) than the private ones (19.9%).
The retention and desistence rate at basic education stood at 5.6%, -1.6 percentage points (p.p.) below the previous school year.
The number of students enrolled at secondary education decreased by 0.9%. The success rate at secondary education was 83.5%, increasing by 0.5 p.p. from 2015/2016.
5,292 teachers worked in the 3rd cycle and secondary educational institutions, a 1.9% drop from 2015/2016.
Concerning tertiary education, the number of students enrolled at this level of education in 2016/2017 was 3,250, down by 0.5% from the previous school year. The number of institutions providing tertiary education remained the same (a total of five, three public and two private). The teaching staff rose to 340 (308 in 2015/2016).
