According to the Lists of Personnel, the number of employees and mean monthly earning increased by 0.5% and by 3.1% from 2018, respectively

The Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM) releases today, on its website, the update of the Time Series on Lists of Personnel with data for 2019.

These data come from the statistical compilation of information provided by the Annex A of the Single Report which contains data about the social activity of the enterprise. All employers with at least one employee must provide data, which is reported by the establishment.

In the scope of this statistical operation, in 2019, 47.8 thousand employees (full time and full paid) were counted in the establishments located in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Compared with 2018, there was a 0.5% increase.

In 2019, the tertiary sector concentrated the vast majority of employees (79.8%). 19.2% of the employees worked in the secondary sector and 1.0% in the primary sector. The number of employees in the tertiary sector decreased by 0.1% from 2018, while in the primary and secondary sectors there was a 12.8% and a 2.4% increase, respectively.

In 2019, 53.9% of the employees were male and 46.1% female. The figures for male employees remained the same, while female employees increased by 1.0%, compared to 2018.

By size class, the largest increase between 2018 and 2019 was registered in enterprises with more than 500 employees (+16.2%, up by 1,578 employees). Also, in 2019, enterprises with more than 500 employees concentrated the largest share (23.7%). It should be noted that except for this class and the class of 50 to 99 people (219 more workers), there was a decrease in employees, compared to 2018.

The number of employees with basic education – 1^st cycle or lower, 2^nd, 3^rd cycle and Bachelor degree showed a decrease from 2018. The most representative groups of employees by the level of education were “secondary” (32.2%) and basic education – 3^rd cycle (27.1%). Employees with a graduate degree or higher accounted for 15.0% of the total. In 2006 they represented only 6.8%.

The mean monthly earning in 2019 stood at 1,130.18 euros, 3.1% higher than in the previous year (1,096.41 euros). Male employees (1,208.78 euros) had a higher earning than female employees (1,038.29 euros). While in 1995 women received 77.6% of the earnings of male employees, this ratio rose to 85.9% in 2019.

The level of education is an important factor of differentiation among employees. The employees with a lower level of education (below basic education) have a lower mean monthly earning (912.84 euros). Between those with the basic education 1^st cycle (965.48 euros) and basic education 3^rd cycle (962.51 euros), the gap is not pronounced but it widens for those with secondary education (1,050.20 euros). Holding a graduate degree allows a significant increase in the mean monthly earning (1,811.06 euros). The employees with a Master’s degree have the highest earning (1,897.45 euros).
