Average monthly earnings of full-time employees with full earnings increased 6.3%, settling at 1 406.81 euros

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has made available the Time Series of the Lists of Personnel, now including 2024 data provided to Statistics Portugal by the Strategy and Planning Office of the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security. The statistical compilation of the Personnel Charts is based on Annex A of the Single Report — an annual document detailing the social activities of enterprises, completed by employers with at least one employee. In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), this statistical operation is conducted with the collaboration of the Regional Directorate for Labour (DRT). The geographic breakdown of the data corresponds to the workplace location of the employees, with the information being allocated based on the establishment's address.

In 2024, as part of the statistical operation conducted, 60.5 thousand employees under full-time employment contracts with full remuneration (FTEs) were recorded in establishments located in the ARM, representing a 4.6% increase compared to the previous year (+2.7 thousand employees). The ARM followed, more sharply, the national trend of growth in the number of employees, whose change was 1.7%.

The average monthly earnings of FTEs in 2024 were 1 406.81 euros, a higher value than the previous year, which stood at 1 323.96 euros, corresponding to an increase of 6.3%. Nationally, average earnings stood at 1 576.03 euros, representing an increase of 7.9% compared to 2023.

In terms of average earnings by NUTS 2 regions, the ARM was above Algarve (1 320.22 euros) and Oeste e Vale do Tejo (1 346.57 euros) and below Alentejo (1 409.53 euros), Centro (1 410.88 euros), the Autonomous Region of the Azores (1 431.89 euros), Norte (1 474.68 euros),  Peninsula de Setúbal (1 545.45 euros) and Grande Lisboa, which had the highest average monthly earnings (1 935.68 euros), being the only region above the national average.

In the Region, the municipality of Funchal had the highest average monthly earnings (1 464.72 euros), followed by Porto Santo (1 418.25 euros), the only ones above the regional average (1 406.81 euros). In contrast, Porto Moniz (1 056.70 euros), São Vicente (1 103.95 euros), Santana (1 137.83 euros), Ponta do Sol (1 146.20 euros), Ribeira Brava (1 202.80 euros), Câmara de Lobos (1 233.56 euros), Machico (1 341.95 euros), Santa Cruz (1 343.04 euros) and Calheta (1 383.19 euros) were below the average.

Distribution of monthly FTE earnings in the Region with less asymmetry compared to the national distribution

In 2024, earnings distribution in the ARM showed lower asymmetry than the national average. The median monthly earnings in the ARM were 1 112.71 euros, with a third-to-first quartile ratio of 1.48. Nationally, the median was 1 186.55 euros and the ratio was 1.71.

By NUTS 2 regions, Grande Lisboa presented the highest median monthly earnings, reaching 1 410.28 euros, followed by Centro with 1 159.50 euros, Peninsula de Setúbal with 1 159.48 euros, Norte with 1 142.10 euros, Alentejo with 1 129.15 euros, Oeste e Vale do Tejo with 1 115.00 euros and the ARM with 1 112.71 euros. The Autonomous Region of the Azores (ARA) and Algarve were the regions that presented the lowest median values, reaching 1 106.35 euros and 1 100.00 euros, respectively.

The Grande Lisboa region stands out as the region with the greatest asymmetry, having presented a value of 2.12 for the third-to-first quartile ratio, whilst Algarve and the ARM were the regions that presented the lowest ratios, 1.46 and 1.48, respectively.

In the Region, the difference in median monthly earnings between the two genders was also notable: 1 081.60 euros for women and 1 141.40 euros for men. The disparity in mean monthly earnings between genders has been decreasing in the ARM, reaching 4.9% in 2024, below 7.7% nationally.

Median monthly earnings of full-time employees highest among workers aged 35 to 54

In 2024, median earnings were highest among FTEs aged 35–54, standing at 1 150.06 euros. FTEs aged up to 34 years had the lowest median value, at 1 061.20 euros, and those aged 55 and over had a median value of 1 125.73 euros.

The median monthly earnings of FTEs working in the Region in 2024 with non-European Union (non-EU-27) nationalities were 93.32 euros lower than those of FTEs with Portuguese nationality, amounting to 1 032.27 euros and 1 125.59 euros, respectively.

Median monthly earnings followed the increase in educational attainment, rising from 991.72 euros for employees with no education to 1 671.13 euros for employees with higher education. In 2024, the disparity in average monthly earnings between educational attainment levels in the ARM stood at 26.1%, lower than the 30.8% for the country as a whole.

In the ARM, in 2024, median monthly earnings for permanent contract holders (1 176.87 euros) exceeded those of fixed-term contract holders (1 033.00 euros).

Full-time employees in the 'Services' sector with the highest average monthly earnings

In 2024, the "Services" sector had the highest average monthly earnings (1 411.46 euros), 0.3% above the regional average. "Industry, construction, energy and water" (1 397.49 euros) and "Agriculture, livestock production, hunting, forestry and fishing" (1 150.58 euros) sectors had values below this average. The disparity in average monthly earnings between sectors of activity in the ARM was 1.6%, below the 5.1% nationally.

Enterprises with 500 or more employees recorded the highest mean monthly earnings, at 1 718.10 euros, standing 22.1% above the regional average, and enterprises with 1 to 9 employees recorded the lowest mean monthly earnings (1 164.22 euros), although they recorded a 7.7% increase compared to 2023. The disparity in average monthly earnings between employee categories in enterprises in the ARM stood at 14.4%, lower than the 16.4% nationally.

Regarding average earnings by main occupation, the largest increase was seen in "Plant and machine operators and assembly workers", a group that recorded an increase of 8.8% (+107.79 euros) compared to 2023, followed by "Farmers and skilled workers in agriculture, fisheries and forestry", with growth of 8.5% (+84.15 euros). In 2024, the mean earnings of these main occupations stood at 1 336.85 euros and 1 071.74 euros, respectively. The disparity in average monthly earnings between main occupations in the ARM has been decreasing in recent years, falling from 39.4% in 2014 to 31.7% in 2024, although in the last year, there was a slight increase of 0.1 percentage points (pp). At the national level, in 2024, this indicator was 36.5%, reflecting an increase of 0.2 pp compared to the previous year.

Net attraction rate of dependent employed population positive in the ARM

The proportion of the employed population that transferred from one enterprise to another relative to total employment in 2024 was 12.4%, an increase of 0.7 pp compared to the previous year. Nationally, 13.0% of the FTEs under analysis changed enterprise, representing an increase of 0.1 pp compared to 2023.

The net attraction rate in 2024, which is the ratio between the difference between the inflow and outflow of FTEs between 2023 and 2024 and the average number of employees between 2023 and 2024, was positive in all municipalities in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, except for Porto Moniz, São Vicente and Porto Santo, which recorded rates of -0.8%, -2.3% and -2.6%, respectively. Machico had the highest rate, at 2.5%. The average for the ARM was 0.6%, a decrease of 0.8 pp compared to 2023.
