Number of deaths dropped by 16.3% compared to the same month of the previous year
In April 2023, the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded 231 deaths, which was lower compared to April 2022 by 45 deaths or a decrease of 16.3%. In the first four months of the year, there were 994 deaths, 138 fewer than the same period in 2022, representing a decrease of 12.2%.
The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the number of deaths in the reference month to the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019, reveals a mortality excess of 3.2%.
During the reference period, there was 1 recorded death under 1 year old was recorded, and no stillborn fetuses were registered.
In April 2023, there were 134 live births, indicating a decrease of 11.3% compared to April 2022, with 17 fewer births. The total number of live births in the first four months of 2023 (569) was 2.1% lower than the same period in 2022, with 12 fewer live births.
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 97 persons in April 2023, which was an improvement compared to the same month of the prior year, where there was a natural decrease of 125. From January to April 2023, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -425, showing a decrease compared to the same period in 2022 (-551).
In the fourth month of 2023, there were 66 marriages celebrated, representing a decrease of 22.4% compared to the number of marriages celebrated in April 2022, with 19 fewer marriages. From January to April 2023, a total of 251 marriages were celebrated, an increase of 25 (+11.1%) compared to the same period in 2022.
