Father's Day

As to highlight Father's Day, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) presents a brief description of the profile of the Father who lived alone with his children in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), according to the final results of the 2021 Census. Fathers of children born in 2021 from mothers residing in the Region are also characterised.

1. Profile of the Father living alone with his children, according to the 2021 Census

According to the 2021 Census data, 2,324 single fathers with children lived in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, representing 3.1% of the family nuclei in the ARM. The main characteristics of these fathers were the following:

• 75.0% lived with 1 child/ stepchild, regardless of age;
• 18.5% lived with one child;
• 32.7% were 65 years old or over;
• 33.2%, had only the 1^st cycle of primary education;
• 47.3% were employed, 6.3% were unemployed and 46.4% were economically inactive;
• 76.2% of fathers living with children under 15 were employed;
• 78.8% of fathers living with children aged 25 or over were economically inactive.

2. Characterisation of the fathers of children born in 2021

The Fathers of the 1,744 children born alive in 2021, from mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, were characterised by:

• 96.1% were residents of the ARM;
• 3.5% had foreign nationality;
• 54.7% were between 30 and 39 years old;
• 41.3% lived out of wedlock cohabiting with the mother of the children;
• 22.8% lived out of wedlock without cohabiting with the mother of the children;
• 36.2% had the level of education "upper secondary education";
• 86.3% were employed and 5.2% were unemployed.
