Mother's Day

In honor of Mother's Day, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases a special report today with a characterisation of the profile of single mothers in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), based on the final results of the 2021 Census. The report also characterises the mothers of live-born children in the Region in 2022 and recalls some results from the Fertility Survey conducted in 2019.

Here are the main highlights of this release:

1. Profile of single mothers according to the 2021 Census

According to the 2021 Census data, there were 15,363 single mothers with children living in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, constituting 20.7% of family households in the region. The main characteristics of these mothers were as follows:

  • 69.4% lived with one child/stepchild, regardless of age;
  • 25.5% lived with a child under 15 years old;
  • 29.3% were 65 years or older;
  • 28.1% had completed only the first cycle of primary education;
  • 45.7% were employed, 8.2% were unemployed, and 46.1% were economically inactive;
  • 64.9% of mothers living with children under 15 years old were employed.

2. Characterisation of mothers of live-born children in 2022

The mothers of the 1,758 live-born children in 2022 who were residents in the Autonomous Region of Madeira had the following characteristics:

  • 4.7% were of foreign nationality;
  • 54.9% were between 30 and 39 years old;
  • 41.8% were living outside of marriage in cohabitation with the father of the children;
  • 20.5% were living outside of marriage without cohabitation with the father of the children;
  • 40.0% had completed secondary education;
  • 74.8% were employed, and 10.9% were unemployed and looking for a new job.

3. Fertility Survey 2019

Taking into account the information collected in 2019 from the Fertility Survey regarding women of childbearing age, from 18 to 49 years old, the following information was obtained:

  • 84.8% stated that the very important reason for having their first child was "I wanted to be a mother";
  • The average number of live-born children was 0.96;
  • 62.9% of women considered that the ideal way for a mother to balance work and family life was "Working part-time outside the home";
  • 87.4% agreed that "A woman can raise a child alone without wanting a stable relationship";
  • 94.1% considered that there should be incentives for having more children.
