DREM releases the “Health Statistics” publication
The number of physicians registered in the Guild at December 31st of 2013 was 778, up by 4.1% when compared to the corresponding day of 2012. The number of physicians per 10,000 habitants maintained an upward trend; in 2012 there were 28 doctors per 10,000 habitants, while in 2013 that ratio rose to 30.
In 2013, 2,093 nurses were registered in the Guild (down by 2.5% from 2012), which corresponded to 80 nurses per 10,000 habitants (82 in 2012).
The data from the Hospitals Survey show that, in 2013, the average number of inpatient beds was 1,867, representing a ratio of 7.1 beds per 1,000 habitants (unchanged from 2012).
In 2013, 313.5 thousand external appointments were registered, a smaller figure than in 2012 (315.2 appointments).
11.8 thousand major and medium surgeries were performed, 16.1% of which urgent. The number of minor surgeries stood at 10.0 thousand (10.3 thousand in 2012), dropping by 2.6% from 2012.
In the year of reference, 1,817 parturitions were counted in Madeira’s hospitals (down by 10.3% from 2012), 25 of which were twin parturitions.
Data concerning the causes of death show that, in 2013, the diseases of the circulatory system – the main cause of death – were responsible for 25.9% of the total deaths in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.The malignant neoplasms and the diseases of the respiratory systemaccounted for 21.9% and 19.6% of the total number of deaths.
