Hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira had more hospitalisations and less outpatient appointments
The provisional data of the Hospital Survey show that, in 2014, there were nine hospitals in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, three of them official and the remaining six private.
In the year of reference, the average number of used hospital beds stood at 1,822 (average of the four quarters), representing a ratio of 7.0 beds per 1,000 inhabitants (7.1 in 2013).
25,780 persons stayed overnight as inpatients (25,026 in 2013), while the number of outpatient appointments reached 312,820, fewer than in the previous year (313,479).
11,499 major and medium surgeries were performed, 24.5% of which were urgent. In 2014, the number of small surgeries increased by 23.5% to 12,364.
24,175 anaesthesias were administered in the reference year (up by 2,263 from 2013), 60.2% of which local and 26.7% general.
In 2014, 4.8 million complementary exams were required, 82.0% of which clinical analyses.
In the reference year, 138,037 persons were attended in the emergency departments. 84.4% were treated due to sickness and 13.4% due to injuries caused by accident.

Definition of hospital: Health facility equipped with inpatient, outpatient and complementary diagnosis and therapeutic means, with the goal of providing curative medical care and rehabilitation to the population, and also to help in disease prevention, education and scientific research.
