Seven meteorological stations recorded tropical nights on every day of the month

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) today releases the summary of the main meteorological data for August 2026 and simultaneously updates the corresponding Dashboard. This information¹ is provided by the Madeira Delegation of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The Dashboard now includes a new tab, called "Today", which allows users to follow the meteorological data for the latest available hour, expressed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The data are obtained automatically through the IPMA Application Programming Interface (API), a service that enables the automatic provision and integration of information between systems and are updated throughout the day.

This new tab complements the information already available on the Dashboard, which allows meteorological data to be consulted across different time references: annual, in the "Annual" tab; monthly, in the "Month" tab; for the previous day, in the "Yesterday" tab; and now, for the latest available hour, in the "Today" tab.

Air temperature

In August, the highest mean air temperature was recorded at Funchal/ Observatory (25.4 °C), while the lowest occurred at Chão do Areeiro (17.3 °C).

Compared with the August climatological normal², all meteorological stations with available information recorded mean temperatures above their respective reference values. The largest positive deviation was also at Funchal/ Observatory, where the mean air temperature was 1.7 °C above its climatological normal.

As for extreme air temperatures, Pico do Areeiro (CFM) recorded both the absolute maximum and the absolute minimum temperature of the month: 30.7 °C, on the 3^rd, and 5.1 °C, on the 28^th, respectively.

Regarding the number of days with high temperatures, Porto Moniz recorded 3 days with a maximum temperature equal to or above 30 °C. It is also noteworthy that, at seven meteorological stations, the maximum temperature was equal to or above 25 °C on every day of the month and that, likewise, at seven stations, tropical nights (minimum temperature equal to or above 20 °C) were recorded throughout the month.

Precipitation

In August, the highest total precipitation was recorded at the São Vicente meteorological station, with 39.0 mm, while Funchal/ Observatory was the only station that recorded no precipitation at all.

Compared with the climatological normal² for August, both positive and negative deviations were observed in the precipitation totals of the meteorological stations with information available for this analysis. The largest positive deviation was recorded in Santana, where precipitation reached 36.7 mm, 6.1 mm above its climatological normal. Conversely, the largest negative deviation occurred at Chão do Areeiro, where 9.7 mm were recorded, 11.8 mm less than its climatological normal.

Regarding the number of days with precipitation, the Santana station recorded the highest value for the threshold of precipitation equal to or above 0.1 mm, with 24 days, also standing out at the 1.0 mm threshold, with 11 days.

None of the meteorological stations analysed recorded days with precipitation equal to or above 10.0 mm and, consequently, there were also no days with precipitation equal to or above 20.0 mm or 30.0 mm.

Relative humidity

In August, monthly mean relative humidity ranged from 58% at the Pico do Areeiro station to 92% at the Santo da Serra station. The minimum daily value (3%) was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station between the 9th and 11th, while the maximum value (100%) was reached at 9 meteorological stations, on different days of the month.

Wind

In August, among the meteorological stations with available wind information, the highest mean wind speed was recorded at the Selvagem Grande station, with 23.1 km/h, while the lowest occurred at the Monte station, with 3.7 km/h. The maximum wind gust (76.3 km/h) was recorded at the Pico Alto station, on the 15th.

Sunshine

In August, the Porto Santo/Aeroporto station recorded 296.2 hours of bright sunshine, followed by Santa Catarina/Aeroporto, with 277.0 hours, and Funchal/ Observatory, with 238.3 hours.

Sea water

In August, the mean sea water temperature, measured at Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal), was 23.9 °C. The mean daily temperature ranged from 23.2 °C, recorded on the 4th, to 24.6 °C, observed on the 8th.
