In the 3rd quarter of 2025

Both the active population and the employed population reached record highs since the beginning of the series in 2011

According to the results of the Labour Force Survey for the 3rd quarter of 2025, the unemployment rate in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) was estimated at 5.3%, 0.4 percentage points (pp) lower than in the same quarter of the previous year and 0.5 pp higher than in the preceding quarter.

The active population increased to 140.0 thousand persons, representing a growth of 2.7% compared with the 2nd quarter of 2025 and 4.5% compared with the same quarter of the previous year.

The employed population stood at 132.5 thousand persons, up by 4.8% year-on-year (+6.1 thousand persons) and by 2.1% quarter-on-quarter (+2.7 thousand persons). Among the employed population, 2.9 thousand persons were in part-time underemployment, 8.0 thousand held a secondary occupation, and 17.0 thousand worked from home (14.2% of employed women and 11.5% of employed men). It should be noted that both the labour force and the employed population reached their highest levels since the beginning of the series, in the 1st quarter of 2011.

The estimated number of unemployed persons stood at 7.5 thousand, representing a decrease of 1.7% compared with the same quarter of the previous year and an increase of 14.3% compared with the previous quarter.

The unemployment rate encompassed 12.9 thousand persons, a decrease of 5.3% (-0.7 thousand persons) compared with the same period of the previous year and an increase of 0.6% (+0.1 thousand persons) compared with the preceding quarter. The unemployment rate was estimated at 9.1%, down by 0.1 pp from the previous quarter and 0.8 pp lower year-on-year.

The inactive population, estimated at 122.2 thousand persons, decreased by 0.9% compared with the same quarter of the previous year and by 2.2% compared with the previous quarter.

The activity rate of the population aged 16 to 89 in the 3rd quarter of 2025 was estimated at 61.8%, 1.3 pp higher than in the same quarter of the previous year and 1.4 pp higher than in the previous quarter. The activity rate for women was 57.1%, 9.9 pp lower than the activity rate for men (67.0%).

In Portugal as a whole, the unemployment rate in the quarter under review stood at 5.8%, 0.3 pp lower than in the same quarter of the previous year and 0.1 pp lower than in the previous quarter. By region, Peninsula de Setúbal recorded the highest unemployment rate (6.9%), followed by Grande Lisboa (6.2%) and Norte (6.1%), both above the national average. At the opposite end,  Algarve registered the lowest unemployment rate (4.5%), followed by Oeste and Vale do Tejo (4.6%), the ARA-Autonomous Region of Azores (4.8%), Centro (5.1%), Alentejo (5.2%), and the ARM (5.3%).

From today, the DREM website provides access to a new interactive Labour Market Dashboard, bringing together quarterly and annual data since 2011 on key indicators collected through the Labour Force Survey, as well as data supplied by Instituto de Emprego da Madeira on registered unemployment. This tool enables dynamic and detailed navigation, offering users an interactive view of the evolution of the labour market over recent years, reflecting its main trends and changes.
