In 2016
Movement of passengers in the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased compared to 2015, while passenger transport by bus and cruise ships decreased; movement of goods in the regional seaports also increased
According to the data compiled by DREM, in 2016, the passenger transport by bus decreased by 2.2% when compared to 2015. In the year of reference, 16.7 million passengers were counted in the urban lines (-2.2%) and 7.9 million in the intercity lines (-2.2%).
In the sector of air transport, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo recorded a movement of 3.1 million passengers during 2016, a 14.6% increase compared to 2015.
In the field of sea transport, the Ports authority counted 297 cruise ships in the seaport of the Autonomous Region of Madeira during 2016 (down by 15 cruise ships from the previous year). The number of transit passengers decreased by 9.9%. The seaport of Funchal received a total of 517,425 transit passengers, the majority of which (89.6%) Europeans. In 2016 and compared to the prior year, there were fewer British (207,327, change rate of -2.0%), Germans (178,058;-4.8%) and Italians (26,298; -28.9%) visiting Madeira.
The transport of passengers in the sea line between the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo grew by 17.4%, reaching a total of 314,189 in the year of reference.
Regarding the movement of goods in Madeira's ports, the statistics for 2016 show increases for both loaded (+4.0%) and unloaded goods (+4.8%).
Vehicle sale registries made by the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira decreased in 2016
In 2016, the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira registered the sale of 12,732 vehicles (new and used), 84.6% of which were light passenger vehicles and 14.1% light cargo vehicles. The sale of 159 heavy vehicles (1.2% of the total) was also registered during this period. There were 337 fewer registries than in 2015 (-2.6%).
