In the first half of 2014

Passenger movements in land and air transport increased, when compared to the first semester of 2013; goods unloaded in the regional seaports decreased

According to the data compiled by DREM, passenger transport by bus increased by 4.1% in the reference period.  9.0 million passengers were counted  in the urban lines between January and June 2014 (year-on year change of +5.1%) and 4.0 million in the intercity lines (+1.8%).

In air transport, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo recorded a movement of 1.2 million passengers during the first half of 2014, a 6.5% increase when compared to the same period of 2013.

In sea transport, the Ports authority counted one less cruise ship in the seaport of Funchal in the first semester of 2014, when compared to the first six months of previous year (there were a total of 146 of this type of vessels in 2014). Notwithstanding, the number of transit passengers increased by 0.1%. The seaport of Funchal received a total of 240,371 transit passengers, the majority of them (91.2%) Europeans. There were more Germans visiting Madeira during the reference period (104,473, year-on-year change rate of 39.5%), but less British (71,036;-17.0%) and Americans (10,054;-32,1%).

Regarding the movement of goods, the statistics for the first six months of 2014 show a negative trend vis-a-vis the same period of 2013 for the unloaded goods (- 6.3%), and the opposite for loaded goods (+4.7%).
