DREM releases transport statistics for the year 2018
Land transport - Passenger transport by bus decreased while the vehicle acquisition increased.
According to the data compiled by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), the passenger transport by bus in 2018 stood at 24.6 million, decreasing by 0.7% over 2017. 16.5 million passengers were counted in the urban lines (-1.8%) and 8.1 million in the intercity lines (+1.6%).
In 2018, there was a 11.1% increase in the acquisition of vehicles by units resident in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), reaching a total of 4,525. The number of new light passenger cars stood at 4,027 (+11.2%), while the number of light cargo vehicles acquired by residents in the ARM was 413 (+9.0%).
The Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira registered in 2018 a transfer of 14,282 used vehicles, 85.3% of which were light passenger and 13.7% light cargo vehicles. 136 heavy used vehicles were registered, about 1.0% of the total. Compared to the previous year, the vehicle sale registries of used cars increased by 4.7%.
Air transport - Passengers in Madeira’s airports decreased by 0.9% year-on-year.
In air transport, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo recorded a movement of 3.3 million passengers during 2018, a 0.9% decrease compared to 2017. In both airports (Madeira and Porto Santo) there was a decline in the number of passengers, of 0.7% and 6.1%, respectively.
Maritime transport - Passengers in transit in Madeira’s ports slightly decreased. Movement of goods increased.
In maritime transport, the Ports authority counted 293 cruise ships in the seaports of Funchal and Porto Santo in 2018, the same as in the previous year. The number of passengers in transit had a slight decrease of 0.1%. The seaport of Funchal received a total of 533,273 transit passengers, the majority of them (89.2%) Europeans. In 2018, Germans were the most common nationality among those who visited Madeira aboard cruise ships (199,827, a 3.0% drop from 2017), followed by the British (193,559, -1.8%) and the Italians (21,111, +21.1%).
The passenger movement in Madeira’s ports (Madeira-Porto Santo and Madeira-Portimão-Canarias sea lines) stood at 686.5 thousand.
Regarding the movement of goods in Madeira's ports, the statistics for 2018 show a positive trend vis-a-vis 2017 (+1.0%) determined by the increase (+1.9%) in the unloaded goods, since the volume of loaded goods declined (-4.4%).
1,963 recreational vessels entered in the marinas of the ARM in 2018, representing a decrease of 9.9% compared to 2017. These vessels carried 6,394 crew members and passengers, down by 1,291 compared to the previous year.
