DREM releases the transport statistics for the first quarter of 2023, in conjunction with the publication titled "Transport Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira - 2022

Today, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) is releasing transport data for the first three months of 2023, encompassing various modes of transportation. Additionally, the publication titled "Transport Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira - 2022" is also being made available.

Land transportation - Increases in all indicators compared to the 1st quarter of 2019

Based on data compiled by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), collective transportation by bus in the first quarter of 2023 saw a total of 6.8 million passengers. Out of this total, approximately 4.3 million passengers were on urban routes, while interurban routes accounted for 2.5 million passengers. Comparing these figures to the first quarter of 2022, there was an overall increase of 17.2% in the total number of passengers transported. Specifically, urban routes experienced a 21.0% increase, while interurban routes saw an 11.1% increase.

Between January and March 2023, cable cars in the region sold nearly 311,000 tickets, which indicates a significant year-on-year change of 90.3% and a 41.3% increase compared to the same period in 2019. Out of these tickets, 94.4% were purchased by adults, 3.7% by children, and the remaining 1.9% were sold to other types of users, such as farmers, residents, and students. During this period, the total revenue generated amounted to approximately 3.9 million euros, demonstrating a substantial year-on-year growth of 117.7% and a 53.5% increase compared to the same period in 2019.

In the first quarter of 2023, the Regional Conservatories recorded the transfer of registration for a total of 3,783 used vehicles. Among these, 85.9% were passenger cars, 13.2% were light goods vehicles, and approximately 0.9% were heavy vehicles. Comparing these figures to the same quarter of the previous year, there was an increase of 349 registrations, representing a year-on-year growth of 10.2%. Furthermore, this increase was 9.2% higher than the number of registrations during the same period in 2019.

Based on information obtained by the Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP) from the Institute of Registration and Notary, in the first quarter of 2023, residents in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) purchased a total of 1,730 new vehicles. This figure indicates an increase of 696 vehicles compared to the same period in 2022 and a rise of 654 vehicles compared to the same quarter in 2019.

Provisional data provided by the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) reveals that in the first quarter of 2022, there were 904 road accidents requiring police intervention. This indicates a year-on-year increase of 27.0% and a 15.6% increase compared to the first quarter of 2019. The number of victims involved in these accidents amounted to 265 individuals, which is 3 more than the same period in 2022 but 27 fewer than in the same quarter in 2019. Among the victims, 236 were reported as having suffered slight injuries, 25 as serious injuries, and 4 as fatalities.

Electric vehicle acquisitions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira more than doubled in 2022 (+117.1%)

According to data collected by DREM from ACAP, in 2022, residents in the ARM purchased a total of 629 fully electric cars. This represents an increase of 69.1% compared to the previous year. Additionally, there were 1,030 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles powered by diesel or gasoline, indicating a growth of 162.8% compared to 2021. When considering both fully electric cars and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, the overall number of electric vehicle acquisitions reached 1,659 vehicles, reflecting a rise of 117.1% compared to 2021.

Air transportation - In the first quarter of the year, passenger movement at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira surpasses 1 million

In the first quarter of 2023, the airports in the ARM recorded a passenger movement of approximately 1,048.6 thousand, indicating a positive year-on-year change of 67.6%. Furthermore, compared to the same quarter in 2019, there was an increase of 43.4%. Both Madeira and Porto Santo airports experienced growth in passenger movement, with Madeira Airport showing a year-on-year change of +68.8% and Porto Santo Airport recording a change of +36.4%. When comparing these figures to the same period in 2019, the values for the first quarter of 2023 exceeded them by +43.6% and +37.9%, respectively.

In the first quarter of the year, air cargo in the airports of the ARM experienced a 3.7% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. However, when compared to the first quarter of 2019, there was a slight decrease of 0.3%.

At Madeira Airport, the cargo numbers remained the same as last year (-3.2% compared to the same quarter in 2019). On the other hand, Porto Santo Airport witnessed significant growth with a 256.7% increase compared to the previous year and a 125.7% increase compared to the same quarter in 2019.

In both ARM airports, there was an 8.3% increase in unloaded goods, which remained unchanged when compared to the first quarter of 2019. However, loaded goods decreased by 16.5% compared to the previous year and by 13.0% compared to the same quarter in 2019.

Maritime transportation - Increase in goods movement at ports

In the field of maritime transportation, there were a total of 94 cruise ships that arrived at ports in the ARM during the first quarter of 2023. This represents a decrease of 1 ship compared to the same period in the previous year. However, when compared to the same quarter in 2019, there were 2 additional ships that made a stop at the region's ports. Although the number of stops remained relatively stable compared to the previous year, there was a significant increase in the number of transit passengers. In the first quarter of 2023, the Region welcomed 229,767 transit passengers, indicating a notable year-on-year increase of 142.2% and a 10.3% increase compared to the same period in 2019.

During the analysed quarter, only the Port of Funchal received transit passengers, with a total of 229,767 as mentioned earlier. Among these passengers, the majority (93.8%) were of European nationality. The predominant nationalities of transit passengers were German, accounting for 48.4% of the total and experiencing a year-on-year change of +122.6%. The British accounted for 37.2% of the total, with a significant year-on-year change of +183.5%. Dutch passengers represented 1.1% of the total, experiencing a year-on-year change of +229.0%, while Austrian passengers accounted for 1.0% with a year-on-year change of +191.2%.

In the first quarter of the current year, the Madeira-Porto Santo line recorded approximately 32.5 thousand passengers, reflecting a 29.1% increase compared to the same quarter of 2022. However, there was a decrease in passenger numbers when compared to the same period in 2019, with a decline of 5.7%.

The cargo movement at ARM ports during this quarter showed positive changes compared to the same period of the previous year, with an overall increase of 5.9%. When compared to the same quarter in 2019, the increase was even higher at 17.2%. This positive change was primarily driven by the growth in cargo unloading, which experienced a 7.1% increase compared to the previous year and an 18.1% rise compared to the same quarter in 2019. However, cargo loading witnessed a decline of 3.4% compared to the previous year, although it still showed a 10.1% increase when compared to the same quarter in 2019.

Between January and March 2023, a total of 355 recreational vessels entered the marinas of the Region, indicating a year-on-year increase of 29.1%. When compared to the same months in 2019, this represents a substantial growth of 70.7%. These vessels accounted for 1,397 crew members and passengers, reflecting an 85.8% growth compared to the same period last year and a 57.7% increase compared to the same period in 2019.
