Passenger movement at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 41.8% higher than in the same month of 2019
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today data for March 2023 on air transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), based on information provided by ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal.
The data shows that there were 392.1 thousand passengers at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira during that month, transported in 2,793 commercial flights, representing year-on-year changes of 49.5% and 37.0%, respectively. Compared to March 2019 (pre-pandemic month), there was also growth, with a 41.8% increase in the movement of passengers and a 33.4% increase in the movement of aircraft.
For the year to date (January to March 2023), there was a year-on-year increase of 44.3% and 67.6% in aircraft and passenger movements, respectively.
In March 2023, on average, each aircraft (considering those that landed and took off) carried about 146 passengers (135 in March 2022) at Madeira airport, while at Porto Santo, the figure stood at 59 passengers (49 in the same month last year).

In March 2023, both domestic and international passenger movement at Madeira airports showed positive year-on-year changes, with international traffic growing more (+52.1%) than domestic traffic (+47.4%). Compared to the same period before the pandemic (March 2019), domestic traffic grew by 53.4% and international traffic by 33.0%.
During this month, domestic traffic at Madeira airport (which accounted for 54.3% of the total) carried more passengers than international traffic (45.7% of the total), while at Porto Santo airport, domestic traffic was even more significant (73.4% of the total).
Scheduled flights accounted for 93.9% of all aircraft movements and 95.5% of passengers at Madeira's airports in March 2023 (91.9% and 93.1%, respectively, during the same period last year).
The occupancy rate of aircraft handled at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in March 2023 was 82.6%, with Madeira Airport reaching 83.4% and Porto Santo 60.9%. This represents an improvement from the same period last year, when the occupancy rates were lower (78.8%, 79.7%, and 58.0%, respectively).
Between January and March 2023, a total of 1,044.7 thousand passengers embarked and disembarked at Madeira airports, with 47.0% traveling exclusively between airports located in the national territory, including inland and domestic connections, and 53.0% being international traffic. The United Kingdom (36.5%) was the main country of origin and destination of international flights from the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, followed by Germany (21.6%) and France (7.4%).
