In August 2023
Aircraft occupancy at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira exceeded 90%
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) is releasing the first data for air transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for August 2023, sourced from ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal.
During the aforementioned month, the ARM airports witnessed the movement of 480.2 thousand passengers on 3,230 commercial flights, marking year-on-year increases of +5.0% and +3.7%, respectively. When compared to August 2019 (pre-pandemic period), there was also growth, with a +38.8% increase in passenger movement and a +29.4% rise in aircraft movement.
For the first eight months of 2023, year-on-year changes in aircraft and passenger movements were +14.9% and +22.6%, respectively.
On average, each aircraft (considering arrivals and departures) transported approximately 153 passengers (151 in August 2022) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, this figure was 109 passengers (112 in the same month the previous year).

In August 2023, both domestic and international passenger traffic at the ARM airports showed positive year-on-year changes, with international traffic (+9.1%) experiencing stronger growth than the domestic segment (+0.9%). Compared to the same pre-pandemic period in 2019, there was growth in both segments: domestic traffic increased by 44.7%, and international traffic by 33.6%.
Madeira Airport saw a predominance of international traffic (54.1% of the total), while domestic traffic accounted for 45.9%. Conversely, at Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic dominated (82.7% of the total), with a more significant disproportion compared to the previous month.
In August 2023, regular flights at ARM airports represented 91.7% of total aircraft movements and 93.3% of total passenger movements (compared to 91.4% and 92.7% in the same period the previous year, respectively).
The occupancy rate of aircraft at the Autonomous Region of Madeira airports in August 2023 was approximately 91.4%, with Madeira Airport at 92.0% and Porto Santo Airport at 84.2%. These rates were higher than those in the same period the previous year, which stood at 88.4%, 89.0%, and 82.1%, respectively.
From January to August 2023, passengers who boarded and disembarked at ARM airports totalled 3,249.0 thousand. Nearly half of this figure pertained to traffic exclusively between airports within the national territory, including domestic and internal connections (47.8% of the total combined), while the other half corresponded to international traffic (52.2%). Among international flights from ARM airports, the United Kingdom was the primary country of origin and destination (32.9% of the total), followed by Germany (20.1%) and France (8.9%).
